For snow to settle, it be ideal if the air temp was at 1C or below and Dp below -0C.

Snow falling is pointless....we need it to settle! So, in summary, the air temp should be less than 1C.

Only then does dp matter

Dew point is crucial for knowing if precip when it gets to you is going to be snow or not.
Unless the precipitation is very heavy the dp must be below zero.
In any case it would want to be less than 0.5c :)

So when radar watching we watch dew points aswell.

Dp below zero here, first time all winter during the day and with clear blue skies. Temp 3.2C, dp -0.6C, no chance of any real precipitation here of course but great to wake up to a clear crisp morning for the first time in god knows how long. I'd gladly take a week of this

I'm delighted, after three days of wretched mild and damp weather, to say it's now cold and crisp in a light easterly breeze. It's just too bad we'll be back to the old regime on Friday. How people prefer mild weather to this I just don't know!

Is it due to the air temperature, colder on coast as the beast nudges west:confused:

No idea really but a thought

Easterly air rises and cools (thus more moist) as it gets here.

When wind from West, it is descending, warming and drying - thus relatively warm and dry in westerlies.
