He looks delighted with himself up on stage.

He should. Pretty much every pundit had declared him dead in the water.

We're heading for the closest finish in a GOP presidential primary/caucus since the 1936 election in South Carolina.

Romney just said he's going to balance the books. Yeah, good luck with that one.

Yea I had a look at them there. They are pretty sensational alright. It won't get him too much further though surely.

MITT ROMNEY HAS WON THE IOWA CAUCUSES BY 8 VOTES. Glad I stayed up for it. Switched between FOX and CNN, I prefered CNN's production but I felt FOX were more knowledgeable, the magic moment was when Wolf Blitzer of CNN rang a republican party chairwoman in Clinton county and informed her that not all the results had gone to Ames, within a couple of minutes it got sorted out, glad I stayed up for it though annoyed Ron Paul came third.

If you remember Huckabee's vote here from four years ago, Iowa is above average in popularity for religious conservatives.

I doubt Santorum will fare so well in most other states.

Congratulations to Santorum. He played a blinder in the camapign.

However he'll hardly stick it out, unless there's a coalition oc the Right behind him.

Will Perry and Bachman endorse a Catholic..?

I guess this makes Santorum the not-Romney of the week.

Wonder who's turn it'll be next...

Bachman expected to announce her withdrawal shortly.

Suppose her and Perry will back whoever they think will be most advantageous.

As this article points out that since 1972 only Bill Clinton and George McGovern have won the nomination without winning New Hampshire or Iowa. Also any candidate that has won both has gone on to win the nomination. Seen as Romney is a dead cert in New Hampshire any other candidate will have to make history to get the nomination.

I'm thinking that Bachman will back Santorum and I think Perry will most likely back Gingrich. Although the optimistic Ron Paul supporter in me wouldn't be surprised to see either of them back Paul.

To what extent did Romney actually "win" the Iowa caucus? He won the popular vote and whatever media mileage he can subsequently get out of that. But given how little came between Romney, Santorum and Paul they're each projected to get six delegate votes. With that in mind, surely they're on level pegging. Am I missing something?

It's all about perception going into the rest of the season. Sure a large win would have been a big boost but there is a bonus to being number one no matter the margin.

As an aside it was interesting to note that Romney got pretty much the same number of votes this time as he did in 2008.

I don't doubt that Romney will get mileage out of the fact that he won the popular vote, but I don't think it's "all about" that. At the end of the day it's the amount of delegate votes you get that matter the most. On that note, I thought this was interesting.

It's perception but all 3 can claim a victory and even Newt has come out of it respectably.

eight in the difference? wonder how many paul votes were counted as romneys or santorums! I'd be more concerned in new hampshire with the amount of e-voting systems there, paul definitely wont do so well
