Why doesn't Ireland have at least one IMAX screen?

Thought Antrim Omniplex had an IMAX screen, going by their clever "Omnimaxx" title. Turns out it it's just a large screen! Can't see there being a market for on in Ireland alright, due to our small population! But am definitely for the technology and hope more films are shot in IMAX, and not this 3D rubbish!

Manchester has about half the population of Dublin.
Um no. Within the city limits Manchester has about 30k less people than Dublin and that's only because in the immediate suburbs of Manchester exists the separate city of Salford. (It's a common phenomenon in England as Central London actually consists of the cities of Westminster, London and Southwark.) Adding the greater metropolitan areas of both Manchester and Dublin, Manchester has nearly a million more people.

Alright, so now that we've established that Odeon's iSense is not IMAX, I've split discussion relating to it off into its own thread.

First of all IMAX is not a gimic!

Secondly "an IMAX experience" movie can be in any cinema willing to invest in it. It doesn't have to be like the old one in Parnell Sq (cineworld location).

I have just come from Canada, the birthplace of IMAX ,which they so like to mention ..alot, and saw Inception, Spiderman etc all in a regular theatre with not an enormous screen.

what matters with imax is the quality, the sound!! the experience.
3D Imax is extremely close to 4D with less hassle and gear.

I kid you not, it is the one way cinemas will start to come back, and boom out of this downloading lark.

EPIC is the only word i can say, EPIC !

    and worth every penny.

I used to be one of you 'HD looks the same as SD' people,
Try watching HD for a month then switching back.

The future and the glory of entertainment is here

all you have to say is the film title ...... and then
    in --->"3D IMAX Experience"

Well that certainly is impressive projection technology, I must say.

Basically they don't make any money with Imax, London barely does and they show all the latest movies and regurlary have showings all through the night just keep in business. Dublin can't sustain that amount of business.

I'm talking about films shot in IMAX, of which there's only 4 that i'm aware of. The last Star Trek had no IMAX sequences, but Abrams is considering shooting some for the next one.

Bit late for that considering it's already been filmed

There is/was an IMAX in Lisburn/Belfast direction if memory serves.

There's something called iSense at the cinema in the Point Village. I don't know about the tech specs versus iMax

There isn't a proper IMAX anywhere in NI - nearest to us is over in the UK.

The Odeon up here used to have an IMAX screen. Cinema was refurbished and due to them not making much money off it, it was reduced down to a normal screen.

For anyone finding themsleves in Yorkshire, I went to see TDKR in the National Media Museum in Bradford. The Museum itself is really good and worth a look before/ater seeing the film. The top level has a big window looking in to the IMAX projection room too which is cool.

On the subject of the whole digital thing too, is there a reason why IMAX cant be digital and not still be real IMAX? Surely its easier to make the screen size using digital than lugging enormous imax cameras around sets?

Isn't it filmed with dual digital cameras?

Dont know tbh. Just going by all the negative digital talk. I'll admit to never giving IMAX much of a thought until very recently. Having been to see TDKR in IMAX though I want to see more.

In Nolan's case, no, because his whole reason for shooting in the IMAX format was that he wanted a really large, high resolution image, which he wouldn't be able to achieve using digital cameras.

Saw TDKR in IMAX and posted this in another thread. I'd happily pay €15 to €20 to see a film shot in IMAX again.

    *********

I watched this on an iMax screen in Calafornia.
It was the first time I'd seen anything on iMax. Holey Jasyus.

Before the film started there was a display on how the IMAX screen works, with the perforated screen, a display of the how large the viewing area was & my favourite a backlight view of each speaker behind the screen with an arrow on the screen popping up to show where it was and you could actually see the speaker unit through the perforated screen.

The shot with Batman standing on the aerial structure in the daylight was literally breathtaking.

As for IMAX, It could have been "Big Mommas House," and I'd have been amazed & went straight back in for seconds.

Best cinema experience of my life

Personaly, I didnt enjoy it nearly as much when I saw it the 2nd time in Dundrum. IMAX spoiled me.

I can't justify the price, sundry expenses and inconvenience going to England to see a film but I desperately love IMAX, seeing as we just got an iSense screen makes me think we'll never get a proper IMAX screen.

So have any of you folk been to the new iMax on Parnell St or the iSense at the point? How do they compare to one another?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭Bullseye1

I would say sound slightly better at iSense, picture better at IMAX and seating better at IMAX.
