Any particular brand? I'm a olive oil noob. Never bought it before.

    That's mad!

You can get Extra virgin olive oil in Aldi/Lidl/all supermarkets that is good for salad dressings but for cooking & making mayo I use light olive oil from Lidl - large bottle for €4. or Phillipo Berrero (?) if Dunnes is handier.

Where do you buy your bacon from? Had a look in Lidl yesterday and while it contained 99% pork it listed about 6-7 other bits and pieces (including sugar).

I get the dunnes simply better one, no sugar in it , nice thick cut, and doesn't prouduce white gunk when cooked. €3 a pack.

Thanking you. And since you're here...I saw a post of yours saying that you bought sauerkraut in Dunnes - what's it like compared to the 'real' thing?

Funny you should mention that, I just forund out the otehr day on the whole9 forum that the Kuhn brand is pasturized so it's fine but not as beneficial as real raw saurkraut :(

But I've started brewing kombucha so I'm getting all my fermentiness from that :)

I found Dawtona Sauerkraut With Carrot in Tesco a few months back: http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=264611472

I checked the ingredients of a few Sauerkrauts and it seemed ok (White Cabbage 62%, Water, Carrot 5%, salt).

I just did a search but can't find out if it's pasturized or not. I didn't even realise any Sauerkraut got pasturized.

This video talking about it has me thinking that maybe it isn't pasturized: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI_I9CgTu-g

Just made myself this bread: http://www.nourishingdays.com/2009/02/coconut-flour-bread/

Not bad. Added some chopped walnuts to it but it's a little bit on the dry side. Don't fancy adding honey to it so any other ideas?

If it was on the shelf & not the fridge it's very most likely pasturized

Hi All. I've started eating Paleo a few weeks ago. I'm following more the Auto-immune protocol (AIP) at the moment as I have been diagnosed ages ago with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and after looking for help came across a girl in the States who is bringing out a book about HS in September. I've bought an e-cookbook "The Auto-Immune Paleo Cookbook" and apart from eating paleo I have to leave out certain foods called nightshades. They're things like tomatoes, peppers, aubergines to name but a few. I also need to avoid eggs for a while. I know, sounds very restrictive, but these things only need to be omitted for a time and then reintroduced over time to see what I'm reacting too. From what I've read the AIP works for other disorders such as Crohn's and IBS.

Anyhow, sorry for being so long winded, but I just was wondering if anyone here has made coconut cream and milk from coconut and if so is it possible to make it with desicated coconut that you buy in the baking aisle in the supermarket? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

I know it is possible to make coconut butter from dessicated coconut but you need a very strong motor on your food processor.
Not sure about the others I'm afraid - why not buy?

If you have a look at paleo parents on FB I know Stacey did the AIP protocol.

Hope it works out for for.

Thanks Dolly. I'll have to go to my local health shop to see what they have. I know I can get milk in the supermarket. I'm more concerned with the cream at the moment. I've come across a Brit living in France with a blog called Healing Hidradenitis since my last post. She's also on Facebook. Am using facebook as well for research as well. Just been having a bit of a flare up this past few days, but seems to be subsiding today thankfully. Don't know what exactly triggered it. Ah well.

    Thanks for your help Dolly

Bump! Started this yesterday would say I've done it 80% , I had a couple of things in my fridge that didn't/wouldn't throw out!

I have one question - I've calorie counted before using the Harris Benedict Equation to get a calorie deficit but not while on Paleo, I actually found it difficult yesterday to make up my calories (1800) just wondering is it important to count calories while doing the food plan or will just sticking to the food plan be enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Paleo is just about changing the types of food you eat.

Counting calories tends to be about losing weight/fat.

Your answer probably depends more on why you are thinking about Calories. Are you trying to lose/gain weight/fat?

Been eating primal since mid July. Eating primal in conjunction with IF. Lifestyle choice more than a way to lose weight but... Have never felt so healthy and weight down from 108kg to 94kg.

I honestly feel like I will never go back to non primal. Built up a load of recipes from various sites (irish paleo girl blog being excellent source) and miss almost no foods :)

Plenty of exercise, IF and Primal is how I plan to go til I drop dead :D

I'm thinking about calories because I want to lose 3st (i'm 16st 9lbs - 5f 8in) and see where I'm at then , I've done nearly a week of Paleo now and I must admit outside of 2/3 moments I haven't really missed bread etc. Definitely feel less bloated also.

Well I recommend getting as much nutritious food into you as you can while losing weight. 1800 calories a day is below what most adults need on a daily basis so you'll probably lose weight/fat alright. Careful not to overdo it and also drink plenty of water.

Thanks for the feedback , yeah I'm eating meat, plenty of veg and some fruit and nuts. I might up it to 2000 calories, this way of eating is appealing to me for the long term but while I still need to lose wait I'll be keeping a close eye on the calories.

I started with the aminos and now I have quite the iherb habit! Love getting my box of random treats - current order on it's way includes make-up brushes, lavendar body wash, macadamia nuts, vanilla extract :D

i was just about to place an order on iherb and noticed that theyre out of stock of coconut aminos and most of the coconut flours.
Does this happen often, or do they generally restock quick enough?

Also, has anyone been hit by customs? or does it not apply to food?

    Thanks

The coconut aminos seem to regularly goes out of stock, don't think they can keep up with demand. Still on my last tin of coconut flour so can't comment on that. They usually re-stock within 2-3 weeks and it will eventually go from out of stock to stock expected in x days.
Never been hit by customs in over 10 orders...

If it's your first order you could use my ref code PIH598 to get $5 off if less than $40, $10 if more.

cool thanks i will use it!

Yeah i'm living in Argentina where its impossible to get coconut flour and aminos (and it's also impossible to get goods sent in without paying a huge customs tax). So i'm going to order and hopefully it'll get to ireland before my week long visit at home next month.

So Holland and Barrett have a buy 1, get 1 half price.

It's on these milled chia seeds which work their price out to about €9 per pack if you buy 2:
    http://www.hollandandbarrett.ie/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=3636&prodid=4135&cid=542

usually they are 9.99 in tesco:
    http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=278729778

It's been a while since I looked up Chia seeds and paleo. Last time (a good few months ago), they seemed like a good food to have. So I did a search today and the few results I picked from google are confusing:
    http://paleoista.com/food-and-drink/are-chia-seeds-ok-to-eat-on-the-paleo-diet-3/
    http://thepaleodiet.com/seed-fatty-acid-composition/
    http://thepaleodiet.com/paleo-diet-special-report-chia-seeds/
    http://www.marksdailyapple.com/is-it-primal-chia-seeds-black-rice-refined-avocado-oil-and-other-foods-scrutinized/#axzz2wi6178iZ

It's like they are saying Chia is good (in theory) but might have some not so good effects (but still good all the same???... confusing)

I like to mash up a banana with some milled chia seeds and a tiny bit of honey. It tastes NYOM.
