Blackberry 8520 - Can't use wifi

I'm trying to use wifi on an 8520. The Vodafone data works fine. It says connected to eircomXXXXXXXX on the homescreen but then I can't use the wifi to get data. The wifi symbol on the top right doesn't light up when I try to use any apps. I've done lots of googling and messed around with the settings but still nothing.…
