Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Regards downloading a pizza: obviously impossible. But how about downloading a motorbike? A car? A new pair of runners? Anything you bloody want if you have the right materials.

You can now buy self-assembly 3d printers for less than a grand, by the way. Download the CAD file, download the CAD software (surely will be vastly overpriced, forcing folk into downloading it illegally), ready your materials & 3d printer...
if you had a 3D printer, could you download a 3D printer? :/

    Absolutely!

The self-assembly ones only do 1 material last time I checked (about 6 months ago), but stands to reason that they'll be widely available in the next 5-10 years.

Unless 'copyright' legislation crushes the prospect completely & puts the internet in the hands of the corporations.

Topics about downloading will always bring out the true nature and hypocrisy of people.

Look, lets be honest. Everyone downloads ;) Deep down we all know why we download ;) but so many people jump to defend/mask it. Eg, "Downloading is only copyright infringement" (in regards to stealing/any wrong doing) or the best one is "I download to see if I wanna buy something" (:pac:)

Simple fact is people download because you can get it for free. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

Games however I would never pirate because I believe that if you shop smart you will always get your moneys worth and those involved really care about there fans. (Valve!!)

I was the same myself until I bought a wii and nintendo decided not to release anything you could even class as a game for about 3 years. Waste of money. The R4 cartridge wasn't though.

I only download stuff if I cant get an actual copy. Generally I'll buy CDs because I like having the case, cover art etc. But I'll download movies and TV shows if they're not released here to buy. Had tyo download season 3 and 4 of Breaking Bad because you cant buy DVD versions :(

    Aren't they on Netflix now?

Speaking of curbing piracy... Netflix ftw. So much more convenient than downloading torrents...

Or... so I'm told anyway! :P

Content needs to become cheap enough, and accessible enough for piracy to become a waste of time.

Services like Rdio, Zune Pass, and Spotify are examples of doing it right. I would be totally happy to pay €10 a month for unlimited music. They've already proven to be successful strategies in the US. Sadly, there's not much of an equivalent here.

I'm an Eircom customer, and if they bothered to make a phone app, and a desktop program for their MusicHub, I'd happily use it all the time. But they don't seem to have any interest in making the service good.

WE7 is similar to Spotify and is available here - they have android/iphone apps too.

I have a premium Spotify account for $10 a month (there are ways of getting it working here). After buying overpriced cds for years (€22 a new release), then illegally for years - a subscription service is the fairest for sure. Dunno what Eircom are thinking?!?! An android/iphone app would give their service some legs.

On the TV/Movie side - Netflix is a step in the right direction. The service is excellent - tv selection is great, but movie selection is a bit dated. Can't argue with the price though.

Apple TV/iTunes/Sky Box Office - again great tech and you pay for the movies you want to watch - but if they dropped the price from €5 to say €3 - I would use it much more.

From a legal point it is copyright infringement. It is not theft.

Want to make an argument that morally, it's theft? Fine, I still wouldn't agree.

Only the first 2 seasons are on the Irish Netflix.

There are ways to get the US version of Netflix where I think these may be available.

Of course I download, not only is it free you also get the new releases often before they have left the cinema, sometimes even before they reach Irish cinema.

    Here's Omniplex's current fare:
    http://www.omniplex.ie/cinema/**********

Out of those 21 films currently on release I could lay my hands on 15 of them in DVD quality right now.
It would take me less than 20 minutes to download & copy them onto a USB key & have them playing on my telly.

Whether or not this is a good thing is for other to decide.

There is, and they are, but I'm not gonna go tunneling my traffic through a random service I have no knowledge of.

I wasn't talking about a VPN, I was talking about a customised DNS server that a few are running at the moment.

All it does is redirect your traffic to the US catalogue instead of the UK / Ireland catalog.

Whilst it's true that other DNS related traffic will pass through this connection also it won't be in such a way that someone can see your personal information, all it's doing is resolving IP Addresses to their Hostnames and visa versa...

In my opinion, the ratio of performance and cost is higher to watch movies via iTunes than DVD or Blu-ray .

I pay for all my software, video games and books. I couldn't care less about the music and movie industry, can crash and burn as far as I'm concerned.

The results of this poll are being sent to the record and film companies' representative in Ireland, Sean Sherlock. Prepare to be sent to prison with the hardest of criminals, including those who evade TV License inspectors and the people who aren't paying the household charge.

I'm not that worried if he says he'll try and convict everyone in the thread as he'll more than likely do the exact opposite.
