A review of the weather in 2011 has found no shortage of warmth, but not when it was most needed.

According to Met Éireann, temperatures were up nearly 1C in places even though a frozen January and cool summer months failed to feel the effect.

The hottest day of the year was June 3 when 26C (78.8F) was recorded at Drumconnick in Co Cavan and Chanterlands, Athy, Co Kildare.

It was also the country’s sunniest day of the year with 15.9 hours recorded at Casement Aerodrome in west Dublin.

The review also showed that a station in Dublin’s Phoenix Park reported the latest highest temperature of the year with 25.7C (78.3F) on September 28, the highest for that month since 1906.

Three stations – the Phoenix Park; Mullingar, Co Westmeath; and Roche’s Point in Cork – reported their highest annual average temperature in over five to seven years.

However, Belmullet, Co Mayo and Cork Airport reported their lowest annual maximums since the 1960s.

The lowest temperature of minus 8.3C (17F) was recorded at Thomastown, Mt Juliet, Co Kilkenny on January 29.

With the warmer than usual temperatures there was also above average rainfall and number of wet days – Claremorris, Co Mayo, had its wettest year on record since 1986.

Most stations reported February and October as the wettest months and March as their driest.

Met Eireann said there were two standout days when torrential rain hit.

On October 24 Casement Aerodrome saw its highest daily October rainfall since the station opened in 1964 – 241% of the normal levels.

But the annual record went to Hacketstown, Co Carlow, on November 11 when more than 11.5cm (4.5in) fell in one day.

Met Éireann also said that according to the World Meteorological Organisation, provisional global temperatures in 2011 are the 10th highest on record, and 0.4C above the 1961-1990 average of 14C (57.2F).

The 2002-2011 period is also being said to be the warmest decade on record.

I think you mean 2011
