Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    hey

im looking to start up a suckler herd and i was just wondering what do ye reckon the best way to go about is. i have 10 freisin weanling bulls at the moment
would my best bet be to
1)sell these as bulls in spring and with that money buy say 10 heifers and put them in calf during the summer
2)buy 20 or 30 calves and build up stock that way or
    3) fatten the bulls , kill them and in a year and half buy in calf heifers when prices may be lower

    any advice,suggestions appreciated

thats a hard one at the min to call . u could go down the route to get into sucklers but the time you get into them the price could fall on them also sucklers have more problems and costs

10 friesan bull weanlings wont buy 10 maiden heifers now or in the spring i think. I f it was me id try to pick up a couple of the best you can get rather than 10 screws. heifers will want to be at least 430kg for bulling. chasing them myself still.
If you had finances say to even pick up a few between now and april i would and hold the weanlings till then. (summer grazers looking for stock). Pick up the rest then.
Dont know what your system is but i'm trying to get everything bulled by march/april, reckon i'll have a few to clear up after but shouldn't be too many.
Looked at the calf option but its near impossible to make it pay and the time waiting till you have a calf on the ground.
