Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I wonder if someone could give me some advice here and sorry in advance for the stupid questions!

We are thinking of buying 25 acres that adjoins our house. We are not farmers.

A nieghbouring farmer has stated that they would 'Pay us for the maps'.

Could someone explain in laymens terms what he means and also, is it legal?

Would we be forfeiting our rights for something in the future?

    Thanks in advance!

I assume he wants you to get the maps and he'll pay for them, even if you dont go ahead and buy, land registery maps etc. and before any1 says it, i know the saying, assumptions are the mother of all f***ups!

I think he means that he will use your maps to submit for Disadvantaged Area Payments

Whoever owns the land owns the maps. What your neighbour is saying is that he will pay you for to be allowed to use your maps (He may or may not want to use your land). This way, he will be able to claim extra subsidies because on paper he will have extra land.

I assume that you don't intend farming the land or keeping animals on it?

Is this legal? I will probably be using the land myself (for non farming activities).

That's a good question. I don't know the legalities of it!

It's not legal to submit land on your SFP application that you aren't farming in the year in question, how it's policed (or more often than not isn't) is the reason that people chance it and often get away with it, but if for example you were inspected and stock belonging to someone else was found on the extra land then you'd be in the s**t.

Some people also want the maps to increase their farm area relative to their stock levels to allow for a high stocking density without a nitrates derogation.

Dont know if it's actually against the law, but it is against department of agriculture rules and would involve penalties to both parties if found out.

if you're not receiving any payments from the department of agriculture then I'm not sure what they can actually do to you though as their normal penalties are a percentage deduction from your subsidy payments.
