Working parents: summer recess and school kids

Kinda thinking ahead here. My boy is in jr infants so I'm new to what most people do in summer. We both work and have no nearby relatives. What do most people do and what costs are involved? (I'm in Knocknacarra if anyone has any specific recommendations.)
