Well, it's gonna be free to play, bad news is you can only fly around Hawaii...

Seems like it's definately more a game than a sim according to this article

    Thoughts?

At least the potential to-buy-or-not-to-buy issue is pre-resolved!

Just looks like FSX. What are the actual differences has anyone read anything? New sim engine? New weather? New Models? It all just looks the same to me.

Its FSX code under the hood but slightly reworked apparently. There will be no sdk released so no freeware scenery or aircraft. All addons will be sold through a microsoft store, that's if they can manage to get any third party devs on board at all. Developers will continue to create content for FSX. Lockheed Martin with Prepar3d and the XPlane team will do well now.

Edit: The developer of Orbx Scenery has said on avsim that he had been in talks with Microsoft until Microsoft pulled the plug in early 2010. He has said that they will be concentrating on FSX and
Prepar3D. He has great praise for the underlying code that runs FSX and said that with a few tweaks it would be very difficult to beat it. Thats exactly what the folks at Lockheed Martin are doing with Prepar3D (the FSX code that Lockheed bought off Microsoft). Lockheed Martin developers are tweaking and optimising the code so that it can utilise more of the grunt from modern graphics cards and rely less on the CPU, which it currently does.

A few people got beta test invites (wink wink nudge nudge) and those people (cough cough) can't talk about the game online at all. I certainly wasn't one, and definitely aren't downloading it. Lucky gits who are!

Prepar3d is looking like the way to go from Locheed Martin. Its the remnants of FSX & ESP that microsoft sold to LM. ORBX and Aerosoft are now releasing addons compatible. Think of it of the resuming of FSX development (guys from old Aces team are working on it). There will also be continued support in the future (very important if you are serious about a game/sim).

    US$9.95 per month per seat
    Why Join?

By becoming part of the program, developers can employ a rich set of resources enabling you to:
    • Develop complementary product offerings ranging from missions, vehicles, application add-ons and so on.
    • Integrate Prepar3D into a solution for deployment
    • Access additional software resources, such as add-ons for lab, development and marketing use
Registered Developer (US$9.95 per month per seat)

Registered Developers can take advantage of baseline benefits to help support their development, testing and marketing efforts.
    • Two (2) Prepar3D Licenses (for set up of distributed simulation and/or multi-channel (perspective correction requires EasyBlend™ license))
    • Prepar3D® Software Development Kit (SDK) [Distributed for free at Prepar3D.com]
    * Note that development licenses are for internal development use only. Deployed systems will require a full commercial license.

The full licence is $500 but thats for developers who release software. The option for simmers is the $10 a month sub. Now I know a lot of you may balk but this is small money considering the time simmers spend. Also you get continued support! The access to upcoming Ver 2.0 and updates after it. I note from the website above you also get two licences. There is no reason why simmers cant start going halves from a paypal account setup for each year. €240 for 5 years continually developed simming anyone?
