If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

    1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    (your pc meets this requirement)

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    (your pc meets this requirement)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
(I assume your pc meets this requirement)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
    (your pc meets this requirement)

so yes, it should run it. There are lite version of windows 7 available with a lot of the heavy intensive stuff ripped from it. its designed for laptops, but will run fine on a desktop too.

Yes, it will run, but barely.

Honestly, you're probably better with Ubuntu on a system like that.

Not sure if Ubuntu can run it but worth a shot

It will tell you if you can run it.

I've had Windows 7 successfully run on a:
Athlon 64 3500+ which is probably equivalent to a Pentium 4 running at 3.4Ghz
    1 GB RAM

I found that Windows 7 was perfectly happy on 1GB RAM but if you have several programs open at one time you will run into problems. Comparing the machines to other far more powerful machines you would find it hard to guess which one was running on the old hardware. Basically Win 7 runs very well on old hardware.
