Seems to be the best one, €160 without winter sports cover if I'm not mistaken?

Do you not need proof of insurance on your way in?

Not trying to be confrontational here Helix, but it's not a good idea to tell someone that they don't require insurance when the IEC clearly state that it's a requirement on their website:

What type of insurance must I subscribe to before leaving for Canada?

You must have and maintain insurance for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. Your insurance policy must cover you for:

    •Health care, hospitalization and repatriation;
    •The Canadian territory (the policy should specify North America, Canada/USA or worldwide);
•The entire duration of your stay in Canada
You must be able to provide proof of this insurance to the Immigration Officer upon your entry to Canada. To learn more about different insurance options, please consult. Please note that the High Commission of Canada to the UK does not have the mandate of providing a list of insurers.

Just because you've never been asked for it doesn't mean that people who haven't gone to Canada yet should risk it. It could mess things up.

Again, not being a dick, just trying to point it out so nobody is caught out.

he asked if you needed proof of insurance on your way into the country. you dont

you SHOULD have it, but you're not asked for it

people know the terms and conditions so it's entirely up to them whether they choose to follow them or not

Again, just because you weren't asked, doesn't mean nobody else will.

I've never heard of anybody being asked. I never got asked for proof of it. By all means get it but they wont ask for it. They never do.

Take it from me guys, I broke my jaw not even two months of living in Canada, after nearly being knocked down. Had to get my jaws wired/hospital stay/horrified parents and the total bill was...12,000 CAD. You do not want to end up paying that sort of money. Thank **** for insurance. A few hundred is better than a few grand if something does happen.

    Hi Frei

Who did you get insured with and when you had your problem did you have any complications with them?

By the sounds of it backpackertravelinsurance seems to best? Anyone disagree?

All you need is medical insurance, any backpacker insurance will do the job.

link is http://www.backpackertravelinsurance.ie/, just ran through a 2 year quote for €285

To my knowledge most Canadian provinces will cover you on their provincial health insurance free of charge once you get to Canada. Some have a waiting period or a certain amount of time after working.

In Alberta you can apply as soon as the day you land and will be covered after 48 hours, pretty much making your backpacker insurance invalid, it is still a IEC requirement tho.

You can do this at any registry office, you can also apply for your drivers licence or ID card as well as SIN (PSI) number. I'd recommend anyone get a ID card, a lot of companies will insist on two forms of ID to sign up, your SIN and ID card are perfect. Its also handy when buying smokes or booze, they have a ID under 25 policy in Calgary... pretty stick aswell. I've been refused buying smokes with 3 months of a beard on me.

One thing about what was said above about the Canada health ins, it will NOT cover repatriation and the like, which the backpackers does and is a requirment of the visa

  • Registered Users Posts: 491 ✭✭againstthetide

Public health insurance also won't cover drugs it medication which can get expensive really quickly.

so the backpackers insurance would cover this?? very hard to make sure all aspects which are important and handy to have aswell as what the embassy ask for.

Yea this one is a bítch. Public health wont cover meds and I don't think backpackers does so you really need Health cover with an employer asapo.

I'll check the backpackers for repatriation now gizza sek

I have just gone through the whole dang policy pdf and I found this:

    B. repatriation if the Qualified Medical Practitioner appointed
by ace assistance believes treatment in Ireland
is preferable, transfer will be arranged by regular
scheduled transport services, or by air or road
ambulance services if more urgent treatment and/or
specialist care is required during the journey

    repatriation must be:
    a) authorised by ace assistance
    b) necessary on medical grounds; and
    to Ireland.

So yes they do do repatriation :)

    I got a 2 quotes from www.backpackertravelinsurance.ie:

Premier cover €324.99 including winter sports Grade 1 (would like to try snowboarding :D)

Premier Plus Cover €374.99 including winter sports Grade 1.

Both quotes for 2 years, do you have to get two years same as visa?

I'm not too sure if snowboarding is in the list of activities in the four different grades? but there is also an option to pick the activities individually.

i dunno i am only getting 1 years insurance as i don't know how long i will be staying for not forking out an extra 140 plus euro for 2 years if i am only staying 1 year . Immigration rarely check for the proof anyway of insurance anyway and if they do i will have my years cover to show them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭hdowney

You are expected to get the insurance for the same length of time as the visa - so two years. IF (and I know they don't often but....) they ask for it at immigration, and you only have 1 year I am not sure whether they'l refuse you entry, or only give you a 1 year work permit.......

I think your right with regard the insurance to cover the visa duration so I think i will get the two year insurance to be on the safe side.
