    Hi,

I'm a teacher and would like to do something good with my summer this year in the line of volunteer work. I'm not sure where or for how long but I'm open to anything really from stuff at home to abroad. Could anybody help me with ideas or where would be good to go?

This organisation recruit volunteers (teachers, nurses etc.) for work in Uganda during the summer:

If you don't want to go abroad, you could take a look at these:

Global Schoolroom is a great organization. Not sure about application closing dates and all that.

i volunteered with usit, went to ghana for 4 months, it was great helping in a secondary school. im not a teacher so it was hard to get the confidence to stand in front of 20+ teenagers, i just helped them with there english & also with the help of my travel guide i taught them about the history of ghana(which they loved). also a map bought in kumasi(main city near the village i was in) came in very handy as the boys were football mad, so showing them where all there fav players were playing was great. i also did some labouring while they were building a new block for the school, & also played football everyday.

i would only recommend to this if you are young, i did it when i was 27.

the people there generally do not need your help unless u have skills they need, ie nurse, doctor, teacher.
i worked on building sites here for about 2 years, but over there they have there own techniques, tools & building methods so me advising them was not needed.

all in all, it brings money to the communtiy, so if i could help out i did, the rest of the time i just met lots of amazing people, chatted to them, smiled all the time, & travelled very safely all over an amazing country.
