A friend of a friend did it and loved it. The work element of his was transcribing church (I think) records that were later going to be digitised. It's a really interesting and well put together course but I'm not sure how useful it is in terms of employability afterward. It's a conversation starter at interview if nothing else.

I'd do it if I were you. I'm currently working for the Cork Northside Folklore Project through a CE scheme and I have no regrets.

FAS will pay you during the course AFAIK and the employment opportunities may not seem a fortuitous as others but the experience gained is worth it. If you can't find work afterwards you can always try and develop a project idea and look for local funding.

Local history and heritage was something I never really considered but the contacts and the experience I gained from this has really opened my eyes to the opportunities that are currently available but are not being used.

Put a bit of thought into it but I totally recommend it.
