They're known for oil pump failure, I'd suspect something along those lines.

Car looks very similar to one I was offered trade for €2,400 about six months ago.

there literally has to be a catch, that car is worth closer to twice that. i paid that sort of money for the glanza.

if thats genuine someone is going to be getting the bargain of the year.

Well, chances are that the car was "slightly" damaged. The paint seems to be lifting on the passenger side bumper and wing. Classic frontal damage and a botch paint job. The lacquer probably wasn't left dry for long enough or something along those lines. It happened me when I bought a passat from the UK. The bonnet had stone chips and the lacquer started to lift off the bonnet in big patches. I was told that the bonnet got a sh1t paint job - at some stage in its life.
That wing/bumper looks the same to me. That wouldn't put me off at all though.
Just because a wing and bumper were replaced/repaired/resprayed doesn't mean that the car took a heavy impact. A 10mph impact could do that. Either way i would be looking for paint stripped nuts under the bonnet and across the engine bay just in case.
I would be far more worried about the oil pump as previously mentioned.

9 months test, 2 months tax, bulletproof. but not too easy on the eyes.

    Not sure if Bangernomics...
If you could grab it cheap then it'd be some buy.
Looks like a lovely clean car.

Where would you get the break cylinder to get it on the road?!

  • Registered Users Posts: 454 ✭✭tuborg_man

ebay has them and I presume the local motor factors wouldn't have a problem getting one in.

That's a grand car for someone on a budget, I'd drive it myself no hassle.

theres also a bit of crinkling over the drivers rear arch i think.

it wouldn't be the bodywork worrying me on that car though. LM says they are known for oil pump issues, i'm fairly sure they are known for having head trouble too. i'd fear the engine is ****ed in that aside from any tatty bosywork. in any case i'd say its cheap because its dogged and hiding something.

I shall end my post here without going into any rant or insult people (hopefully :))

i'l add fuel to the fire and say what makes the corolla un-"proper"? :) it looks a bit low spec, but a nice car.

The 2ZZ/VVTLi engine is about as good an engine as going, and it doesn't suffer from the oil comsumption issues that many other VVTi's suffer from. Obviously anything can be broken, but there is nothing inherently wrong with the engine in that car.

It is a 10 year old car, with a 1.8 petrol engine. A 2002 Celica upon which it shares most of the drivetrain is worth similar money.

At that money, even I'd almost be tempted to pick up a Haynes manual for it and crack open the toolkit.

What's the worst case scenario? You throw another €100 at it and it fails the NCT leaving you having to scrap it. Could ya lose more than €150 on it?

Worth a shot, a lot of the panels are plastic and it weighs well under a ton so not worth as much for scrap as you'd imagine. I had a C15 -the van version of an AX- when I was in France, excellent car, insanely good fuel economy, very simple mechanically, very reliable too, I know of one that was running perfect at 270,000km when it was written off.

If you do buy it and fix it and keep it for a couple of years it might well go up in value. Selling a car for more than what you paid for it is "Ultrabangernomics". :pac:

'02 Citroen C5 for €400? Ok its not the cleanest - but has test till January! Stick a toilet plunger on the passenger door to pop it out a little and away you go :D

Has it been up before though...?

Retro Bangernomics with a hint (hint) of chic. 500 notes and it'll never lose you a penny. A good one of these will only go up in value. New test to boot. :)

Too expensive at the asking but the vendor is really chancing his arm. My bets are you'll take it home for 6-700 quid.

I wouldnt buy a 10 grand,, 3 year old UK import of them with 40k on the clock and a warranty that might not be worth the paper its written on but .......this is just a part ex that they took in today. Anything thats hooky with it is up front. They just want to blow this out. Give it a grilling as you would with any older car then bid away ;)

Nice looking motor. Shame the guy went to the effort of carefully masking the number plates with plastic and leaves the 04D12911 number in the NCT disc visible :D

Decent enough '04 and '05 large saloons for well under 2k. That's a bit of a first!

95% depreciation in just 8 years time...
