If it had a years NCT it would be worth it and then just scrap it after that.

for NCTless Vel Satis? I'll pass thanks!

Hyundai is on UK plates, so no NCT and vrt would need to be paid, and the passat has no NCT and has 240,000 miles...wouldn't be touching either tbh.

Any Passat of that era that's diesel and doesn't have that kind of mileage is clocked.

    i'm talking 150-160 ++.

e-mail Bo and tell him/her you will buy it if it has an NCT. If there is resistance or a price hike, well, suspicions confirmed.
Right enough though. What the hell is car dealer thinking of?
One born every day i suppose.

Haha, not too bothered about the lack of NCT - I was just amused by the idea of buying a car from a fella called after one of the Duke brothers, in Macroom. The fact that it was a fugly vel satis with no NCT just made the prospect even less likely :)
By the look of the background, I'd say that Vel Satis was traded in against a Mazda

523i for €500? No leather (pic looks like fabric), NCT almost out, but she's auto and looks clean enough.

If I were interested in buying that, I'd tell the seller to NCT it and if it passed, I'd give him the full asking price plus the NCT fee of €50 or €55 whatever it is ATM. Surely he can't lose unless the car has faults. Then the negotiation can begin :D

Ah , what did you go putting that up for? I'd nearly resigned myself to never owning one now they are hitting right in to my price range. :(

I'd much rather an Avantime but they arent in that price bracket.

You would be a brave man buying either of them

If a seller thinks theres nothign wrong with their car they should have no issue putting it through the NCT. Theres really no reason a car should be sold without an NCT. It'll probably be worth an extra hundred or two with a full NCT so unless theres somethign worng its a win win for the seller

Unless the seller is genuine and really is leaving the country soon and needs the quick sale. May not have the time to be waiting around for an NCT appointment ;)

We're talking about a €500 car here. Worst case senario you bargain him down to €400, something goes wrong, and you more than make your money back from parting it out. €200 for the wheels and a couple more things and you've your money back and just move on :)

Nah if you're keen and in Dublin, you can have an appointment within days. I'm not buying that "I'm emigrating tomorrow" bullsh1t :)

99% of people in Dublin would not be interested and would not have the space for parting it out (and indeed, would not have a female other half that would allow them too :p)

Real worst case scenario is that you've just wasted €400 on a lemon...

    No NCT, no joy :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,172 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Fair points on all counts (including the other half allowing it :D )

Though even if you bought a €400 lemon, you might still flog it on for €300 :pac:

Yes - I'm doing what I can to save face now! :o

A few years ago for sure that kinda tactic had a fairly high success rate :D

But now, so many people are selling. For peanuts. A buyer really can have his cake and eat it...

Tough game if you're trying to sell at the moment though. My thoughts are with all the people desperate to sell stuff (for very little) because they very badly need the money. Tough times we are in :(
