Mad idea, but you could always just use it when you need it, and store it when you don't, provided you have the space.
Good point. Maybe I'm thinking that way cause I don't have the space. :(

Ok, that Jeep Grand Cherokee doesn't belong in bangernomics http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jeep/grand_cherokee/r10066/comments/page-2/ but no, it would be a shame to scrap it. Plenty of work done. Major back axle work could be coming up or could be covered recently, in which case if you got a year out of it and liked that sort of thing, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

As said if serviced regularly a decent engine would last lots beyond 200k miles, 'tis the rest of the car might be the issue. Cars generally reach end of life due to the value of them compared to the cost of maintaining them rather than an actual terminal engine issue :)

I've read lots about 1.4 Golfs, are they that bad?
tbh I'm often tempted as there seems to be some great bargains about.

Didn't occur to him to check the correct bhp, it is an EP which means eco power = 150bhp:o

Not true. Here's a 2.3 from an Aero 9-5, all 250 horses and its badged as an Eco Power

Do you know what, you could do a lot worse. Still looks current, half the weight of a modern family saloon so its a bit of fun to drive and its got tiny mileage up. Chance 500 quid and see where you end up .....

With a black eye would be my guess

Offer just barely over half the asking price? If it were me selling I wouldn't be long telling you where to go. I know people factor in a little wiggle room when it comes to pricing things, but offering half the asking price is pretty insulting don't you think?

And no - I'm not in a mood/huff etc :D Just throwing it out there as I'm curious as to what others think about asking half the asking price when a car isn't really overpriced/dreamer in the first place? :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,348 ✭✭✭bladespin

I'll never understand someone getting all insulted by an offer regardless of how much it's for, all they have to do is say no

The guys a trader, he's chancing his arm. It aint worth near the asking and thats the point. If I tell you the skys black and you can see its blue then why would I get insulted when you set me straight. I already know it but it doesnt change the fact that some people will still beleive me.

He most likely took it in as a trade in on the house and with a little cash over too. If some lula bids him 900 in the next 24 hours on the back of the asking price in the add then bully for him. If not then it'll be first up with the cash (what ever amount that may be) so he can go dancing this weekend :P

Remember if he asked 3 grand for it, would it be insulting to offer 1500 quid. Its about knowing the worth of something and not what they're asking ;)

Fair enough Ed - didn't realise it was a trader selling it.

Just after seeing so many cars on here where people are suggesting offering half the asking price (in many cases where the asking price is pretty reasonable) it just got me wondering if there's a point where these offers become insulting ;)

My thinking too. Offer €500 and be prepared to go to €600 or a bit more if he plays hardball. Good chances you'll get it. Any lower than that would be ridiculous seeing the car has €280 worth of tax on it and a new / nearly full years NCT

And if you get it, rip off that spoiler before you drive home :D

Always roll the dice, thats my motto. You just never know what you'll get away with. When I'm bidding low I even say that I know I'm bidding low and that i'm chancing my arm. Usually gets a laugh but atleast thats better than an argument. No point telling someone what its worth with an arrogant tone, that pisses people off for sure. Cheeky is always fine though :)

Every model of the E39 could be got as Msport. And all pre-facelift 520i's where 2.0. All later ones where 2.2, when the 523i was discontinued.

thanks the way I always thought it worked was the 528i was the only prefacelift Sport one and then after the facelift they where all offered as sports

I've seen other models as MSport in pre-facelift, it was probably just not as common an option to tick than with facelift. I reckon BMW was just better to market them then.

And this one has all the bits (black headliner, dechrome, bumpers, pre-facelift sport steering wheel). It also seems to be a bit of an individual specification (cloth seats, wood trim).

Lots of post facelift ones without sport trim. It's an exec saloon, so a lot of customers in that segment would prefer standard suspension to sports suspension. And probably the subtler look too.

Those look like the lovely Alcantara seats - far nicer than cloth (and as nice as leather IMO).

I really hope I own an e39 again. Really regret selling mine, as many owners do.

Best saloon car ever made that is affordable to own for most people.

I saw a beautiful '02 touring version for sale a few months ago. Imola red and MTec just like my old one, but on sale for a whopping 8K.

That's mad money now. You've got a bit of a horn for estates though, don't ya? :D

Gotta admit I quite like them too. Very much so. That said, I veto any kinda MPV / SUV and my better half vetoes estates. Given our need for 5 seats and a lot of storage, the biggest of the saloons / hatchbacks out there will do us just fine (within our family constraints :D). The current saloon 9-5 has a better boot than a E38 7-series BMW and a E39 5-series BMW BTW :)

Pushing the limits of Bangernomics, plus it might be a shed. But if its not a shed and you got it under 1500 quid it'd be okay.
