A change of wheels would be in order then

I got a half way decent insurance quote for an E34 520 so I've beed thinking about it :)

    A must! :)

As for a daycent quote, 1519 when I was 21 on my one above :Dwhy am I driving a 406....

Common sense would be to advise a non vanos M50 engined E34, heart says go for a 12v M20/M30 :) money no object is S38 territory ;)

A cracking drive, might be a big-ish car but can handle well. Mine is tail happy with a heavy right boot in the frost and rain :pac:

I had a vanos 520i with a blown hg. A right nightmare to do

They're heavy on bushes at the front. Bushes all round should be changed 1st thing, especially the rear subframe mounts. In other terms, keep on top of the suspension and steering components.

I love the 4 speed auto  the 5 speed was crap. Manuals are robust

Steering can be wooly due to the steering box.

Rads can fail. Mine was replaced before I got it. The A/C fan in front of them often seizes with lack of use

On the M20 engines, the icv can stick. Cleaning it out cures that. Oil mixing with water could indicate a cracked head. Leaking sump is usually a failed cork gasket. Tappets need adjusting every 12k miles, belt every 36k miles

Generally don't rust much, jacking points can crust though (mine need doing). If you do get one, whip off the back bumper and check the fuel lines that they're not rusted into oblivion or that'll be all the petrol gone in no time! :(

Pixels on the dash do go with age. They are replaceable

My 2.5 does about 28mpg combined at a push, don't know about the other 2. That's a 4 speed auto

I think I've covered most of the important points.... :)

Edit: forgot the wiper clonk issue. Linkage goes weak with age and "clonks" off the bonnet

Jesus man thanks for that, I wasn't expecting to get a full buyers guide for an E34!
I might have a chance to go and see a few over the next couple of weeks (got loads to do atm and the snow isn't perfect car buying weather :p) and see what I think of them.

Really thanks for taking the time to post that :)

EDIT: Just rechecked insurance quotes €1089 tpf&t :D

How good or bad are these yokes?
It's prob a little on the high end of bangernomics, but it has a brand new test, new T/B, Full History & leather.
Looks like a well looked after car.

Just found the one below for €350 less and two years newer..!

Haven't a clue if they are any good. I assume not at that price?? Or is it a case of poor brand image??

My Dad had one years ago and it was quite a nice drive. Extremely comfortable seats, good ride quality and decent enough poke....and at least when you're driving it you won't see how ugly it is!. Reckon they're an excellent bangernomics mobile....

[OT] Just to clarify RE metric wheels you're talking about:

    http://www.michelin-passion.com/passion/front/templates/affich.jsp?codeRubrique=43&lang=EN

My brother had BMW 5-series with TRX on. Made tyres bald, looked for replacement tyres - noticed they're dearer than the entire car, bought another (2nd hand of course) set of wheels with tyres (TRX again), after that one more set, finally bought 15" steel rims and 12 nice (but TRX) alloys sold for scrap. :D [/OT]

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4677277

€ 695 '02 Laguna "with NCT and tax" - I wonder how long that NCT is. ;)

    Full-18072019.jpeg

    ==============

    EDIT: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4709032

Fresh NCT, €1195, low miles (if genuine).

Same seller marked it as sold in an ad from 6 days ago here (asking €1450)

Dunno what that's about? Maybe sale fell through and he had marked it as sold already?

Anyway at about a grand it looks like a pretty good deal alright :)

I guess he was drunk, at least when he wrote ad's description:
Good Tyires Air Condsion Angel Lights Car In Perfect Order No Scrashes And No Dents Abslolutly Mind Car

    :D

It also says that it has cruise control, but I thought it wasn't standard? I could be wrong of course...
But, if I was right, then two lies about the car and a suspiciously low mileage....hmmmmm.

Lol, WTF happened few pages ago lol?! I see people got it out of the system anyway, so i wont open the can of worms again...

Anyway. I Love this posted here.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4686587

No mentioning of NCT on it though, but i doubt there would be much to do in even if it does not have one. Would love one of these in black and 525 :p

How times have changed, a 12 year old Celica asking €1650.

Back in April 2007 (6 years ago) I bought a than 12 year old Celica for €4200, and it was at the time great value :)

Worth a look, probably needs little or nothing for a test.

Not looney cheap and not an overly well specced example but it has the 1.25 engine which is nippy, once it's been looked after this mightn't be bad...

Mileage not specified, 10 months NCT and 7 1/2 months tax, asking €1450.

2004 Panda with decent lash of test....

Anyway, in the meantime, a current bangernomics stalwart..!!

They won't be around for much longer.

Assuming it doesn't need much for the test and there is wiggle room in the price. Looks like a decent car.
Boring, slow and reliable. For less than a grand.

    Gasp.

Drivers seat looks like it has more than 120000 miles on it to me but I could be wrong.

The seat on the E34 I posted 2 pages ago has a less worn looking seat and 230,000 miles on it...

those are e38 comfort seats , a rare option on an e39 ,the back panel looks a little off colour , seats could have been changed at some point.

    True.

My 'gasp' was at what must have been a typo though. They had 1,213,490 as the milage on it earlier......I was impressed. Much less so now....

That E34 you posted is seriously nice......
