The common failure are ceased rear brakes calipers which seem to be done too. Other than that bullet proof engine and typical jap reliability.

Seemingly another problem area in them is the immobiliser which according to the former Mazda technician that fixed my cousins "goes on all of them at some stage". Set me cousin back between €400 and €500 quid as I recall, part of that charge being for tow to garage as he was left stranded on the road...a good deal of what the car cost him in the first place.

    Apparently dampness is the culpurit...

This is super value if it looks and drives as well as it reads

Little tin can but ultra reliable. Last of the Great Micra engines as the updated 03 version went all va va voom with is design but took a major step backwards

The 1.0 was carried over to the K12.

Its not the same engine. The K11 1.0 is a CG engine type and the K12 is the CR.

I'd still prefer the 02 version for a cheap runaround rather that the newer one. Would make me feel less granny-ish:D Did Renault not get their hands on the new design and changed some of the electrics with keyless entry etc.

The k11(up to 02) is a much better car IMO.

The K12 had a lot of dual Nissan/Renault design. The mk3 clio uses the micra chassis as does the Renault modus and Nissan note.

My first 2 cars were micras, the K11 i think (95 and 00) Fantastic little cars. This missus had one also for her first car. Was a little saviour during the snow. Went everywhere! Sorry we let it go. Reliable cheap motoring.

I've got a 96 one in the garage as a spare car. Still runs like clockwork.

I actually preferred my first micra, the 1995 Classic model. Three door with no power steering, didn't need it anyways. Had it everywhere and was a miser on fuel. The 00 Facelift model came with the fogs, colour coding, and a rev counter!! Great motor but just never had the same affection as the first one.

Maybe if I post a Polo, nobody will notice...

999cc engine is fun, economical and frugal. But hey, I'm sure people hate me for this, but my logic is that against a Ford Fiesta, the difference in tax is a hundred euro (and more) you save per year. :D

    750. Nct'd, looks clean and I've seen these for sale with 200k miles on them. Respectable on the motorway as well.

Oh, here is a good one: Clio for 320, Long NCT, etc. Immobiliser is gone, but using this: http://cee-team.com/en/renault-calc.html You can get a cheap jam jar.

    ..............

6 month NCT and it can't be test driven, wouldn't tempt me tbh.

Im sure he just wants to get rid of it, it would be worth a shot if you got it for 250. If you have space for it and and it checks out, you could make an easy 200euro.

Maybe I'm thinking of cheap cars in the wrong way, I'm sure a working one would be less bother to get.

    Anywho! 600euro Japbox! http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3073966

I'm posting this more as as an example of how an old car with high miles, once looked after, can provide years of motoring.

This is a fine example of how big milage need not be the end of the world. Plenty of miles & years left in this bus.

Pity more Irish motorists don't take the same approach to ownership.

I know, its a boring jap box... but I'm bias and I like em..!

Celtic Tiger spoiled you guys. no need to fix anything as new car every year kind of rubish. Today spotted wine-red S70 in Sandyford that looked like just out of factory. ;)

Your joking me right? Of all the small cars I've drove that model Polo was the most horrendous on the motorway. Any slight bit of a cross wind or slight road imperfections resulted in very scary moments indeed. Not that any any other small car I've drove has being sh!t hot on the motorway, just that the Polo was especially bad. I'd definately consider the likes of the 1.25 fiesta to be at least a good notch above the Polo

Also, if you think your sparing juice at motorway speeds with the likes of that 1.0 litre engine in the Polo spinning at an insane rate then think again:)

Despite the lamenting of some people them Corollas are for what they are, a great car. Granted they ain't much of a looker, there are more comfortable cars out there and you generally don't get much in the way of electrical gizmos in them, but maybe thats not a bad thing either.

If your after something thats relatively cheap to run and maintain and is relaible and provides decent space for ferrying the kiddies around without a fuss you could do much worse than a well minded example of that Corolla

galactic mileage, but it looks tidy. get 50 or 100 euro off and it has to be worth a gamble.

Funny you say that because I found the footwell damp on the passanger side when investigating the utterly useless heater that the Mazda had. It was during the cold weather two years ago and no matter how high the fan was I couldn't get the feet warm enough. I later found out that heater matrix/system was leaking.
    Probably common enough fault so.
