Recently started brewing my own. I recommend this approach in light of this recent move.

i also recommend the government chows down on my fat straw.

I didn't think they could do that considering it's a different jurisdiction.

If this was anything other than a over reaction by an increasingly nanny state, they could offset these measures by reducing the duty/vat on drink sold in pubs/clubs etc.

Its just going to push people over the border to stock up and sell it on the cheap and then we will have to poor vintners in the paper saying they are losing money to illegal sellers and then a tax sponsered crakdown that will cost more money and in the end it will change nothing but the quality of life for poor families subsidising an alcoholic or two.

and then what will we have, drive by shootings in the night, and the pimps will be using crack to keep the whores under control

    :pac:

FFS, the one thing we get at a decent price in this country is liqour and now they want to take that away.

Just because some people can't have a few drinks without the need to:
    1. Get in a car and killing someone
    2. Boxing the face off someone outside a nightclub
    3. Mixing it up with a ton of drugs and dropping dead
...or some other form of serious crime means we all suffer.

I propose the members of Boards.ie chip in towards an articulated truck and make weekly trips to the north. Mines a Heineken or Guinness...

    gtfo

Ehhhh... That's probably why he summarised it?
    Recommendations include:
End to sponsorship of sport and large events by 2016.
Increase price of alcohol so it becomes less affordable (increase tax, excist etc...).
Minimum pricing/cost per gramme of alcohol.
No savings on multiple purchases (no more 10 bottles for €10).
    Advertising prohibition.
Social responsibility levy on drinks industry.

    Newry here we come!
Northern Ireland is to adopt similar drink regulations - at the same time.
So there might be very little (if any) difference in the prices.
HEALTH AUTHORITIES on both sides of the Border are planning to introduce a minimum price for alcohol on the island in an effort to combat alcohol abuse.

Government and Northern Executive Ministers decided on the strategy at a conference in Armagh yesterday and hope to agree a minimum drinks pricing structure by year-end.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2012/0127/1224310810349.html
Mr Poots, the North’s Minister for Health, said he would be co-operating with Dr Reilly and Ms Shortall to try to co-ordinate the introduction of the proposed new measures.

“We want to make sure we don’t have a disparity where alcohol is one price north of the Border and considerably more expensive south of the Border, or vice versa,” he said.

Or even better, make it a Dail "Café". So if drink is really so bad they should set an example and not socialise around alcohol, I wonder how likely that is to happen though  .
Once I can still get 8 cans for around a tenner I don't mind, a minimum price of a euro a can while sh!t isn't that bad, as I get most of my drink in Spar its at that price already!

the nordies wont have that - they like a drink too and they wont stand for it when the rest of the uk is paying pennies for their drink

In the future we'll look at ads like this and say "I remember those days, and dark days they were too.We couldn't drink, the internet became censored,we had to pay a tax to live in our homes."

And yet consumption of alcohol has fallen by 17% in Ireland over the last decade.

Ireland doesn't need this report or these measures, the Vintners Association of Ireland do.

Is this 100% definitely happening? Or is there gonna be like a vote or something?
    When?

The days of cheap drink from the off-license/Supermarket are nearly over!

So supermarkets are now legally obliged to sell cans for less than what a pint would cost in a pub? Storm in a teacup tbh. It'll still be cheaper to buy cans than to throw your wages at a publican every payday.

It was in the FG manifesto last year that this was being brought in to prop up the pubs. Right there, black & white. I suppose they're hoping everyone has forgotten it by now

If they try this I'll start crossing the border again. If the nordies follow suit I'll end up paying zero tax on alcohol to any government. There's already plenty of illegal brewing going on, a big jump in prices will see a huge increase in it.

Lol, ye are well on the way down the road of the persecuted cannabis smoker.
First they came for the communists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I was Protestant.

    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Yes but there's no such thing as free market capitalism.

Bailing out the banks is as much a right-wing manoeuvre as taxing problems is a left-wing one. I'd imagine this move to put a minimum price on alcohol was welcomed heartily by plenty of $pecial interest$.

Do you know I find myself drinking heavily at the weekends in recent months as this country has slipped further down the sh1tpipe. Call it a form of escapism but it at least it offers a glorious respite from the constant doom sorrow. I think this might be the final straw that tips me over the fcuking edge.
