They sleep all day and awake all night. If you put a wheel in the cage you'll hear it been used for most of the night.
I had 3 in the house yrs ago

    awh pics! :D

don't handle her too much in the first few days, cause she'll just keep biting you, till she gets to associate your smell with good things like food. leave her be, but I think in the same room as you so she gets used to you being around.

and you'll might be ok, but you probably won't be able to keep her in the room with you when sleeping as the squeak of her wheel will drive you crazy. mine used to do some amount of running, and she used to climb the bars, they went all the way up on top too, and she'd get up to the top and drop down to the ground again :) so you'll have that noise all night too

Start an adorable blog in her name.

Update regularly with her personal diary - what she's got up to this week, her take on wider issues like the Arab spring, how she hopes to burrow naturally someday, remedies for sawdust-induced vaginal itching etc.

nocturnal my hole..... its being sleeping the past hour and im nowhere near her.

yeah she does be climbing the cage a lot and chewing on it too.

i put a empty toilet roll thingy in there to keep her amused as a tunnel.

she hasnt learned how to run on the wheel yet or she's just lazy.

what else do i need for her ?

all she has is her cage, ball, food and bedding.

there's another word for what they are, it's not nocturnal, but it's pretty similar. anyway she'll probably take a few days to settle in.

she'll run on it when she feels like it. toilet roll insert is a good one :)

you just need to make sure she's warm enough, has clean water and fresh food, and plenty of things to chew on for her teeth!

clean water and fresh food is a check...... i reckon she might be freezing her hole off though cos she went into her little hut in the cage and filled it up with bedding ! so the only way in and out is to tunnel the "great escape" way.

yeah she seems happy to chew off the cage and dive off the top of it into the bedding.....

any toys i can get for her ? or does she need to take a shower or a bath any time ?

she might be cold, but no that's her settling in, making it comfortable. my little one grabbed loads of the fluffy bedding we had (it was like a cloud I tell ya) and brought it into her hut. it makes it soft and squooshy to sleep on :) just check that there's no breezes at her, and she should be fine.

she probably won't be bothered with toys tbh. give her a chance with the ball in a day or so, but i dunno, mine never took to it. don't over do it anyway, they have to be able to rest too.

and no, you never ever ever bathe a hamster!!

used to have a hamster when i was a kid , they like to chew carrotts and had the ball thing for him to run around in :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

Robbie you should look up what to feed her, because there's things that hamsters aren't meant to eat like citrus fruits and many more things, that people don't realise. of course it depends on what kind of hamster she is too, syrian or dwarf, but there's lots of info on both.

there are things in 'hamster food' that in some peoples opinions are bad for them (I always took them out) but it's up to you if you want to feed them to her.

If she keeps you up all night running on the wheel you should get on it during the day and see how she likes it.

I've had two hamsters in the past. One name Ben (R.I.P) the other named Chad (R.I.P), whom my brother wanted to call Fcuk Face.

They're adorable little things. Used to keep me awake all night though. On their feckin' wheel and gnawing on the bars. Argh!

When using the wool as bedding, just plop it in the middle of the cage and they'll make a bed/home themselves. Even if you have a little house type thing in the cage, he/she will bring the wool to that itself.

Give them fresh water daily. Just like us, they'd prefer it fresh.

They can get cold so keep them away from draughts. Also, you're not really supposed to handle them as it can induce a heart attack and die. I've never had a problem with holding them though.

True story: My last hamster (Chad) was quite old. I remember I was 13 at the time and one night I had a feeling that he was going to die. So I cleaned his cage and played with him for hours that night. The next morning he was dead in his cage :(. He had great life though.

    Good luck :D.

Thinking of getting one for the young lad.
Do they require company or are they better on their own ?.
Is it safe to let them have a run of a hutched part of the garden during the summer ?.

  • Registered Users Posts: 236 ✭✭mayobumblebee

you should get a glove and start offering her food that way she will get used of ya.
they live about two years she looks like a Russian dwarf to me.

    clean once a week
    food/water everyday
    wood chews for teeth

    stuff of interest
    toilet roll insert
hamster wool make sure its the one safe for hamsters as that one is made from edible fibres of veg.
they have two pouches inside there cheeks so carry food and store it round the cage.

sure look them up on the internet and you will find out loads about them
oh and dont get another one they dont really like company

smother it with lubricant then insert a 2 inch piece of pipe into your anus, then send the lubed up rodent into your anal passage and lie back and think of Ireland.

I had a Russian dwarf hamster. They are incredibly cute but very difficult to tame. I had mine for nine months and he was still biting my fingers at the end. He was able to squeeze out through the narrow bars in the cage so maybe watch for that.

My mother used to keep them for years and warned me against the Russian ones but I was foolishly swayed by their adorable physical appearance.

The big fat fellows make better pets. I don't know what breed.

Girlfriend wanted a hamster but I knew people who had them before and I thought they're fairly smelly like bastards. Cute though.

Ending up getting 2 Degus, instead. I keep them in my room where they ride the shìte out of their wheel. The squeaking of the thing was insane until I put some olive oil on it.

Oh, and they, eh, like to ride each other..........even though they're both females.

    No they aren't

They are rodents but thats where the similarity to rats ends.

OP - enjoy your new pal, play with him but no sexytime...

I've always wanted a hamster, or even a ferret. This house I was visiting a few years back in the States had a few ferrets in a cage and they were actually a shedload of fun to play with.

syrians cannot be kept with another, they will kill each other. (especially males). dwarfs are fine by themselves, they don't require company, but if you wanted more than one, two from the same litter would be best.

they don't need a run in the summer, they'd likely be too cold anyway.
you should get a glove and start offering her food that way she will get used of ya.

she may get used to being handled, doesn't mean she'll like it, but if you wear gloves she won't get your scent so there's not much point in that.

 they're not smelly at all, they're very clean animals. if anything smelled, you friend wasn't cleaning out their cage properly.
