Great to hear of up to 200 new jobs in Westport. COngrats to Allergan and to all involved.

A very well run company. It's presence and continued success in Westport disputes the theory that major FDI should be confined to Dublin and other larger centres.

Press release says they have bought the adjoining IDA park, I presume they mean a portion of it, or have they more plans to reveal?

The worlds supply of botox is made there and well that's booming at the moment.

Great news, that company is keeping west mayo afloat at the moment.

Its great news for mayo and the fact that there will be 250 short term construction jobs is a great boost too.

Maybe a bit of hope for people then. Its a start to try and bring, somehow!, a little hope to the area with so many young people leaving.

Actually all the reports reference buying the Technology Park which had around 6 remaining industrial sites. The MD saying they are positioning to take on new product development so looks like they have big plans in the long term.

That mightn't be the case you know, I am building a garage here and the trouble getting trades was mad.

1/2 of them would have immigrated at this stage!

Great news. Mayo badly needs a boost. We should be thankful Allergan are going ahead with this despite the state of the N5.

What kind of jobs will be created?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭soterpisc

Yes... BUT and big BUT there is a cronic shortage of qualified people that Pharm companies need. Certainly not a lot of them in Mayo.

Ireland has thousands of open jobs for qualified people... We don't need unskilled people with only a leaving cert. (sorry its the hard truth) Companies are crying out for R&D professionals, Lab technicians, programmers, IT, Etc...

Kids need to wake up.. If you want to have a well paid job in Ireland you need to be qualified.

All the IT based jobs are in Dublin or Galway. I spent over 12 months driving from Mayo to Dublin for a 3 day week in IT contract. There hasn't been 1 single Senior developer job in Mayo in the last 4 years. I have seen 2 junior roles and thats it.

Any way don't want to be dragging the thread off topic, but it could be hard to get pharma employees for sure, Allergan should be thrawling the secondary schools now offering scholarships to leaving certs to get them up and running.

    I know the feeling yop.

shameful that castlebar doesnt have fibre optic broadband installed in it. Thats one of the reason for a lack of IT Jobs.

Its an issue but not an issue, I am just over a year now working from the house for 3 different companies and it works sound. Broadband been down maybe 3 times in total but never for so long as it impacts.

I have spoken to a few Dublin companies about setting up here as they have been continuously on for staff and can't get them, but its a big trust thing.

Does anyone know exactly what roles will becoming available in the factory? Will there be any "General Operative" roles or all skilled/trained roles?

Just a Guess, but from what other companies are doing I would not be surprised if its R&D centre (usually looking for highly qualified people) Just a guess, but a lot of companies have done this or are doing this to avail of the tax breaks in Ireland.

Either that or they have a new product range or are planning to introduce a new produce and in that case they could need operatives.

If its a new product I think it first has to have been developed in Ireland to avail of the R&D tax break...

Anyway its good news one way or the other.

He hardly needs to explain it now does he? Its not a secret of the lack of skilled personnel to suit the positions in Allergan.

I think you would be surprised how many suitable people are in Mayo for most of the Allergan jobs. Lab technicians, programmers, IT personnel are not scarce. The Allergan expansion is mainly Botox production capacity increase, however the crisis in europe (particularly Spain) has affected some of their regular product sales so you may find not all these jobs materialise . i.e staff from the other areas or depts may move into the new roles.
And most "kids" have woken up, a degree is now becoming minimum requirement for most industries, where it was diploma level or cert. The leaving cert is really only a college entry mechanism to young people.

Can't agree with you I am afraid, having been involved in trying to hire IT people, both admin and programmers in 3 different companies in Mayo believe me they are not there. Plenty of CV's came in with very very basic IT but it was so bad we only hired 1 person over the 3 companies and we were looking for 6!

Plenty of Mayo people work in IT, but they dont live in Mayo or if they do they commute.
A lot of the IT services for Allergan are outsourced, they have admin staff but the ERP systems in there are outsourced.

They will advertise most of the job opportunities closer to the completion of the building.
