    I like Cigarettes After Sex

Cigarettes After Sex's bittersweet melodies, the unusual high male voice, the unhurried rhythm of wandering nighttime lights, and the restrained guitars tinkling with crystal in the dusky hall's twilight

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭traco

Hi all - first time here in the music section aside from gigs and events.

I've just run through the thread and a lot of info on it. Also registered on mixcloud and followed Eoghan so have to work all that out on the mobile.

Basically the reason I dropped in was to find new music. Growing up it was Gerry Ryand and Dave Fanning at night on the radio, I like Cormac Battles show but listening back on the player is a PITA. So I was looking for playlists on spotify of new music with a slant on some irish stuff. I haven't a musical bone in my body but listen to most stuff with the exception of hardcore dance / rave / dj and the outer fringes of rap. Anything from Imelda May to Public service broadcasting, US modern country etc. So no real genre in particular.

So any suggestions of playlists of people worth checking out would be appreciated as I just seem to get stuck in loops of artists that are too similar to each other.

    Thanks

Here are my top 3 Irish songs of 2022 . The 1st one is a bit techno-y though. There are a few Irish music spotify playlists I go through every week and if I want want to hear something again, I add it to my latest playlist. The range is broad. I just exclude Country, Obvious radio pop, Pop with vocorder/reverb vocals, Anthemic capaldi-type songs, Cheesy "my lovely local river" Irish sons, and song with cliched vocals/lyrics.

I've been around for decades also so I just save songs that stands out , which rules out a lot.

If you like the below I can point you at my playlists (Including my Irish top 60 from 2022)

  • Registered Users Posts: 851 ✭✭✭human 19

My first source of new Irish music is the Hot Press Spotify playlist. After this there is the Raggedcast palylist and the Goldenplec playlist. There is considerable overlap between the 3 . After that you could have a look at the IMRO playlist to see if what were missed from the other 3.The handy thing is that they are all updated every Friday.

A lot of modern music sucks ... if you have heard modern American country music then you have heard the worst music ever made ... anything other than that is a step in the right direction ... even if it is Irish Eurovision entries !!! For some proper country music .... Hank Williams .... for country on the fringes of jazz/blues Charlie Rich esp his early stuff ...
