Civil War pic - Help needed identifying the location

Hi all,

I'm trying to decipher the location of the following pic. The picture info lists it as 'O'Connor Bridge', presumably a typo for O'Connell Bridge, but I'm struggling to picture which junction it is.

Also, the street sign - above the two columns on the left of the building in the background - looks like it starts with 'S' and ends with 'N'.

Any help would be great. Any guesses would be better!

The 'S' could be for Sackville street, The old name for O' Connell street(renamed in 1924). O'Connell bridge was renamed in 1882, so it's possible it's on the junction Eden Quay and O' Connell street? I have some old photos at home of all around that area, from the civil war days, i'll see if there is any with that railing in the general area of O'Connell bridge.

Outside the old Ballast Office at corner of Aston Quay? Buildings across the road could be Westmoreland St.

I'm gonna throw somewhere completely different into the mix as I can't see how it could be O'Connell Bridge.

Could it be where the Mont Clare Hotel is now? In the background would have been Greenes books shop?

Definitely. It's not much of a stealth position when there's a chap out in plain sight pointing half a tonne of photographic equipment directly at you for three minutes.

Possibly this corner of Westmoreland and Fleet Street? Hard to see distinguishing features on the buildings accross the road behind the trees and the busses here, but if you navigate over, you can make some comparisons when zoomed in...

St. Stephens Green & Dawson Street junction. Can the names of the background buildings help any what, what are they?

There is a post box in the photo. It's quite likely there still is one nearby, wherever it is.

I agree with Spurious when he said the sign looks like it says 'St. Stephens Green club', it's also a directional sign so I'm guessing this is the corner of Grafton Street and St. Stephens Green as the club is only a few doors down from here in the direction of the Shelbourne hotel.

I spy a post box too, so I'm convinced.
The only spanner is the sign which I still think is for the Stephen's Green Club - trying to think what else it could be...

The columns definitely look convincing. And the more I look at it, the more I see this angle.

That lane beside the second-hand book shop is still there as a reference point:

Your view is down Abbey Street.
BowWow's is from the southside of O'Connell Bridge looking almost towards Trinity.

I agree with BowWow the picture was taken in front of the Ballast Office.
This is an old picture of the Old Ballast Office.

This would be roughly today's view.

Post box and lamppost still there. Kind of comforting how street furniture ignores all the changes around it.

Not the clearest photo but one of Westmoreland Street looking towards the Liffey. If you look at the shop fronts of the buildings on the right, particularly the white one it matches the one in the ops photo. I think so anyway!

I'm not convinced,when was your pic taken. The fact that it looks older than the OP's, yet the front of the building is painted white and there is no lamp,yet on the opposite side of the road at the corner there is what looks like a lamp, surely the lamps would have been erected near the same time?
Also there must be buildings with double columns elsewhere in Dublin.

It's not, it's just the stone is still clean because the internal combustion engine hasn't been invented yet. The tram system isn't even installed.

If it was still there that lamp would have been out of shot, being right on the corner which is beyond the left-hand frame.

The shopfronts on the former Irish Times building on D'Olier Street have them, but the windows are a different shape.
