Hi lads, i'm organising a trip over to thailand in july for a fortnight and want to get a bit of big game fishing in when i'm over there, has anyone ever done any fishing over there? i don't want to get stuck on a boat with lads getting twisted and making their own chum!! and catching no fish, any reccomendations would be great.

    Hi goss101,

My mate was telling me about it a while back. He went down to a few locals at the beach and asked what the craic was. They are mad for it over there and these lads said they'd bring him out for the day. Apparently they had the best of boat rods & big brand reels which they were showing off to him.
They went out for 3 or 4 hours and caught a few marlin I think it was. He still has the lure they caught one on and its been savaged! This lad usually went to the same area- an island called Koh Phangan.

I've never been to Thailand myself but I do know you will pay over the odds booking stuff from Ireland. Thailand's tourism industry has slowed down a lot so get yourself on the ground first then haggle with them face to face.I went to Vietnam last year and everything we priced up online was half the price when we got there. We did go night-fishing from a boat for squid at one point-I wouldn't bother, not very exciting!

    Enjoy the trip

I went on a fishing trip in Ko Phangan a few years back. The ad in the shop had a lovely poster saying Big Game fishing, pics of barracuda and marlins, the lot for about €20 for the day. I suppose you get what you pay for but I ended up hand lining for half pound snapper on an acient filthy thai fishing boat with a chronically drunk/stoned captain and a gang of miserable Isrealis. Still, it was good craic and that part of thailand is just paradise....

PS, I completely agree with the other poster here, dont book a thing on line. I've been 3 times and you'll save huge amounts by just arriving and haggling.

John Wilson did a programe on that lake, 99% sure it his brothers aswel.
Fishing on the lake is based around uk carping but the fish were huge buggers!

Hey OP, was in Thailand last year and did a day's fishing when on Koh Samui, was the best day of the whole holiday. Caught loads of snappers and little nemo fish all day, did some trawling mid-day and caught a big barracuda.

Was around 25 euro each for the day, just booked it in one of the many agencies on the main street in Chaweng (and got a big reduction since we rented a moped off them aswell) and included pickup etc from accomodation, food and drink, all equipment. Plus, we were there during the quiet season so it ended up just me, my GF and the two Thai lads on a big boat meant for 25 people.

Here's a link to a thread on my local forum. The guy in the pics is a friend of mine. Think the pics alone speak for themselves!! If you need info from him send me a pm and I will put you in touch.
