Apparently the next Humble Monthly is Soul Calibur VI, Yakuza Kiwami and My Time at Portia. Another excellent month with all three on my wishlist this time, good stuff.

2.5 hours till the rest of this month announced too.

The fact they kept it so faithful when it's aged so badly is even more baffling, a ground up remake could have been more interesting.

Plenty of that going around recently.

    EDIT:

    lads

    lads

Shenmue I&II was part of the Crash/Spyro/COD Humble Monthly.

Can't recall better value before at all. Unbelievable month. And SCVI, Yakuza and Portia have now been confirmed as next months' games.

Was thinking to myself I needed to start picking up the Yakuza games on PC soon......Humble must have heard my prayers.

Mod note: No problem at all with long discussions about gaming news in this thread - quite the opposite if anything! - but since there's so much to chat about with the Blizzard stuff I've spun it off into its own thread: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2058028252

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7648325/British-Fortnite-gamer-17-given-life-time-ban-CHEATING.html

17 year old youtuber's tearful apology after getting a life ban from Epic for using an aimbot in a public game. He's only a kid but I've no sympathy. People like this killed MW2 for me. You'll never stamp it out but I'm all for no mercy for those who get caught. I'd ban them from Xbox live and PS plus as well and what ever PC users do.

Agree, so many game I'll choose to play on console just to avoid the majority of it.

A good reminder that teenagers are morons. Sorry-not-sorry to any teenagers reading this :) I am astonished sometimes at just how obsessed children + teens are over Fortnite, and while it makes me feel old & out of touch, it's gratifying to know that aimbots are STILL a thing in 2019 :D a lifetime ban seems about right though, even if it'll never rid multplayer gaming of the problem.

Some of the netflix sci-fi & fantasy stuff has been very adult.

The best description of the trailer I saw was that it looked like a Witcher porn standard of production but without the porn :D

The trailer had an orgy in the background, that was blurred just enough to get it on SM.

Angry Joe didnt get a copy either. He doesnt post a lot of reviews tbh. Colin hasn't reviewed anything since May, he seems to mainly do Podcasts now & short lets plays as far as content goes which isn't exactly great.

Thanks lads. Looked up that tweet and i might be missing the significance of the date or something but can't see why so many people got upset. Read the statement from Greg and it sounded so much worse than it actually looked but whatever, seems like something I've no interest in looking into any further :pac:

What I find ridiculous is these people expecting free codes! Happy to hear Colin and co are buying the games to review them. The people who can well afford to buy them, and actually make money from playing/reviewing them, get them for free. Actually annoys the sh!te out of me, and even worse is the likes of them complaining then. Build a bridge you entitled tw@.

Actually, if someone was sent a free copy/code, I'd be less likely to trust their review at this stage, too much room for 'Oh they're treating me nice, so I'll positively review their games to keep them on my side'. I'd be more likely to listen to someone who bought it and then reviewed it. Realistically, I go by what you Boardsies say tbh!

In more China news, 'China bans children from late-night gaming to combat addiction - Under-18s barred from playing between 10pm and 8am and are allotted 90 minutes a day during the week'. So they get 90 minutes online per day midweek, and 3 hours per day at the weekend. It's also banning spending money: "The new rules also limit the amount of money spent in online games to 200 yuan ($29) a month for those between the ages of eight and 16, and 400 yuan ($57) for those between the ages of 16 and 18. Minors will be required to use their real names and identification numbers to log on to play."

Seems a bit OTT and unenforceable tbh, but seems to be on the game devs to enforce, not the players. But then again, I'd imagine 'Gaming Addiction' is actually a real thing over there.

People can have their views on Moriarty but one thing he is still one of my favourite games media personalities. Pity he chose to strike out with Chris Ray Gun as his choice of partner for Sacred Symbols, nothing against the guy but he seems completely clueless when it comes to gaming. Still a decent podcast and much better than the garbage Kinda Funny have been putting out as of late (though it has become slightly more watchable since Andrea Rene has departed).

In Colin's case he still gets them but not from Sony proper and some others, usually doesn't get mentioned unless its a big game and people are asking when he'll put up a video about it. In those case he says they didn't get an early copy and it'll be after release.

For most I don't think it being free is much of a benefit compared to getting it early. I don't see him dunking on the game in any case if he bought or got it free/early so I think blacklisting does more harm to Sony than good, especially funny since a lot of big Sony people follow and interact with him just seems to be some backroom PR crowd who have taken offence.

In general I'm fine with any publisher or dev not giving a copy out, even if the game isn't bad you don't give it to someone who you know will just **** on it.

Stopped bothering with Kinda funny games.

They're always behind, usually just read a headline or part of an article from somewhere else, and usually get stuff wrong or have nothing to add.

Still watch the main channel but out of the main cast it's mainly for Nick and Kevin.

I think it was more about the timing. To do it on a day that's supposed to uplift women was poor taste and seemed rather spiteful. He's also a douchey guy in general and it was clear it was more than that tweet that ultimately caused the split between him and Greg.

Yeah I think it was just the last in a long line of issues that caused them to split. Colin didn't seem happy with the direction KF was going and just kept goading a large part of their core audience, putting the other guys jobs at risk if people were unsubscribing or not watching.

I liked Moriarty and he had started to do a great section on KF where he really got deep into gaming news. Then he went on to history and politics after leaving KF. I know he's returned to talking about games since, but I've never gone back to watching him. Stopped watching KF too, far too many injokes if you don't watch absolutely all their content.

But yeah, I wouldn't have imagined Colin was high enough on Sonys list to bother with giving him review copies. Some developers, sure, he has long time contacts with them. But in general he's pretty low tier.

Never really known which way to fall on critics getting copies. On the one hand it seems like a reasonable ask, part of the job. On the other it does obviously open up questions of honesty. Would be very expensive for reviewed to buy copies of every single game out in a week, while the market being some oversaturated, "exclusives" presumably help poke the nose ahead.

Receiving games for free and early is necessary for publications to do their work and get reviews out before deadlines.

I'd be more concerned about so called influencers getting free swag as they aren't beholden to any ethics and will lose out of free stuff and therefore content for their sites if they get blacklisted. Most publisher PR teams are well versed in the fact that games can review badly sometimes and when there is threats of blacklisting and ad revenue being pulled it's usually due to a clueless new PR team being set up.

Then you have the likes of Bethesda which flat out refuses to give out any advance copies of its games for review to avoid negative backlash before release.

I think the likes of Youtubers and stuff are required (at least in the US) to state that they received the copy for free if they get a review copy. How many do or how strictly it's enforced is a different matter, but most of the more prominent ones do as it's likely not worth the hassle if there's an issue.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,428 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah they do have to mention that the stuff they got was free. However it's more that I wouldn't trust most of their opinions and the fact that they have to announce they got the stuff for free is to announce the fact that anything they write isn't a review but has to be considered a product promotion as they aren't constrained by any ethics. And it goes for the publishers as well as they can with hold free stuff from influencers for favourable reviews or sign contracts with them without any ethical constraints as they aren't under the same laws and guidelines as the traditional media.

    AAA title + 50
Received Game for free + 20
    Playstation exclusive +20
    Xbox exclusive - 10
    PC exclusive +30
Pre launch outrage about micro transactions - 50
Nintendo exclusive - ignore other criteria and score 80+ regardless.

That is how review scores are compiled :pac:
