Yeah they do have to mention that the stuff they got was free. However it's more that I wouldn't trust most of their opinions and the fact that they have to announce they got the stuff for free is to announce the fact that anything they write isn't a review but has to be considered a product promotion as they aren't constrained by any ethics. And it goes for the publishers as well as they can with hold free stuff from influencers for favourable reviews or sign contracts with them without any ethical constraints as they aren't under the same laws and guidelines as the traditional media.

The problem (beauty?) with 'influencers' is the fact that they target the easily influenced.

I dunno how many videos ive seen with some perpetually smiling muppet starting off his or her shpeil with something along the lines of 'OMG guys, I'm SUPER EXCITED, activision have flown us out to this top secret location so that I can bring you exclusive footage guys of the next installment in the epic series' and so on.

not to mention the ten other videos of them showing their trip / hotelroom / breakfast, all delivered with the same nauseating nonstop enthusiasm that makes me want to smash their happy faces with a shovel.

their target audience laps it all up, completely oblivious to the obvious conflict of interest and lack of objectivity.

FTC's got new disclosure guidelines for influencers in the US.

Influencers don't generally review anything, and even if there's no reason to keep publishers on side it's still in the influencers own interest to make their video as good as possible. So either they **** on the mediocre or bad games for the clicks or they try to make their lets plays look as interesting or fun as possible.

For example I gave Rainbow six siege a chance when I saw the Rooster teeths lets plays for it, they did sponsor content eventually but at the beginning it was a good team game for them to play together and they made it look good. Now when they play world of war ships or some strategy games that makes no sense to me as they're barely able to put up a good showing.

Can't really stop people taking money and pretending to have fun playing a game, especially when it's their own interest to even without any kick backs or fear of blacklisting to make the video as enjoyable as possible.

I follow a niche podcast (<200 views each cast) who get codes every month and they regularly blast a game if it's buggy or boring. Independant reviewers in my experience seem lot more real about things and are actual game fans. I'd sooner trust the most sellout 'influencer' than I one one word from mainstream outlets whose writers couldn't hope to gather an audience without a multi million dollar company pushing it for them.

In good news, free updates for PC users of VC4: https://nichegamer.com/2019/11/07/steam-version-of-valkyria-chronicles-4-updates-to-complete-edition-all-owners-get-dlc-for-free/

And apparently Hitman "3" is taking shape: https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/hitman-3-is-well-underway-according-to-hitman-2-roadmap/

Dear lord I hope they completely dunk the online stuff.

What I find ridiculous is these people expecting free codes! Happy to hear Colin and co are buying the games to review them. The people who can well afford to buy them, and actually make money from playing/reviewing them, get them for free. Actually annoys the sh!te out of me, and even worse is the likes of them complaining then. Build a bridge you entitled tw@.

Actually, if someone was sent a free copy/code, I'd be less likely to trust their review at this stage, too much room for 'Oh they're treating me nice, so I'll positively review their games to keep them on my side'. I'd be more likely to listen to someone who bought it and then reviewed it. Realistically, I go by what you Boardsies say tbh!
    .

It kinda works the other way around. You get endless amounts of unsolicited codes in the inbox there is no way to play them all. You feel an obligation to get it played and reviewed, you get jaded very easily and this is why you see games get panned and then the players play it and love it.

But if you chose to go out and buy a game you want to play, you are far more likely to give a positive review as you are not forced to play it or bound to deadlines.

Imagine your job is to taste mars bars. Every day you eat 40 mars bars. After 2 years you hate chocolate so much that even a new snickers does nothing for you.

Compare that to someone who eats 2 bars a year. They really want a mars bar. They will enjoy it a million times more.

That's why reviewers and players play games differently.

The ones to watch are the "influencers" they are paid to get some swag and show it on their channel. They are paid to stream on their channel.

Epic bought Quixel, a middleware company with a huge asset library and tools.

    Similarly epic bough paragon previously.

so the unreal engine assets library and texture/asset tools is growing a lot.

Quixel are the one who made that photo realistic video with all the rocks and moss.

This film's development has been through Dante's 9 circles of hell. At one stage Wahlberg was earmarked to play Drake. 10 years & 7 directors? he's |Sully.

Introducing Everwild, a brand new world in development at Rare where unique and unforgettable experiences will await...

Reminds me of Breath of the Wild in some ways. Even stuck Wild in the title.

    That's crazy! :pac:
I remember hearing about the movie too years ago. Didn't know it was that long. Tom Holland is a decent actor. Bit young to be playing Drake tho.

Is'nt drake meant to be late 20s / early 30s in Uncharted 1?

  • Registered Users Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

If they're going with a Drake of that age, Nathan Fillion would be the obvious choice, surely...

Reminds me more of WiLD which sadly went AWOL a few years ago. Art wise they've definitely watched Prince Mononoke anyway.

That will be fun. They can do that part in Uncharted 4 where you play as young Drake, everyone loved that.
