GTA online casino getting best expansion is a disgrace.

Days Gone = best playstation game and story. That'll do.

I was actually trying to think what expansion passes were launched this year but couldn't think of many.

Always find it strange when the Game of the Year doesn't win the platform GOTY award for any of the platforms it is on.

    In bizarro world.

Was it public vote or critics panel?

    People with taste :)

It was easily the strongest story led game this year. It was really good.

I believe it was public votes, you could do it online. Users enjoying it more than critics, kinda like death stranding.

    No Love for Sekiro?? :(

We should be thinking about games of the decade now surely with a new one weeks away.

Iceborne expansion for monster hunter. I has gameplay unlike the gambling **** in gta online.

I'll just file it alongside Dead Space and Enslaved. Not bad games but the public seem to heap praise on them when all I see is just good but merely competent games that the critics got spot on in reviews. Days Gone isn't bad but it's nothing special. Also found the story very poor. It's also not Ace Combat 7.

Delighted for Beat Saber, well deserved! Didn't think much of the few new games I've played this year, Days Gone included, so can't really opine on the results!

    No Love for Sekiro?? :(

Sekiro is too "niche" for some people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,061 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I wouldn't say it was too niche, just that it has a specific target audience, which just so happens to be small enough to not win player voting awards. A good game it may be, but if it's not accessible to the vast majority then it won't rate as high.

GOTD is easy. There can be only one it's TLOU......or possibly Bloodbourne

I think voting for GOTD will be hard, there has been some phenomenal games out in the last 10 years, so much that I've forgotten most of them. Right now, I would have said either God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn for GOTD, but when I checked this Polygon top 100 of the decade (which includes Flappy Bird, so taken with a bag of salt) it reminded me of other games which blew me away at the time, and I didn't realise they were from teh last 10 years! Simply from that list, I had forgotten about:

    Mass Effect 2
    Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
TT The Walking Dead (Season 1)
    The Elder Scrolls V
    Superhot
    Titanfall 2
Red Dead Redemption (the first one!)
    Portal 2
    The Witcher 3

That's just the ones from their list! I'm sure there's other in there that I can't recall.

The last of us, Witcher 3, mass effect 2. Would be interesting to vote on that

The Witcher 3, edging out Breath of the Wild and Dragon Age Inquisition for me.

Demons Souls/Dark souls to me is the GOTD and perhaps the most Influential Game of the last 10 years.

Even 10 years after Demons Souls release many publishers/developers draw inspiration from what From Software created even creating a sub genre with a name which I dislike very much Souls-like

I remembered before Ps4 release Mark Cerny and Yoshida talked about the online mode in Demons souls was so Influential to the Social features Sony wanted to implement in the Ps4 and how Ubisoft wanted to use their games aswell for players to pass messages seamlessly in there games to feel more connected .

GOTD is for sure Dark Souls.

Yeah, I realise how that reads now... I'm not good with words. Ah, maybe I should have said that it's not targeting a niche market, but the difficulty/patience required prevents it from reaching some audiences, especially those who like to take on other peoples opinions before actually trying it themselves.

Or, they're like me, who wants to enjoy it but doesn't get any enjoyment out of repeatedly dying, going the same path and killing the same enemies only to die again with the hope of figuring out something to help you die less. Too many games about for that lark!

And I really hope Dark Souls doesn't win GOTY, or any of those types of games. Not because they're bad, but there's enough of them out there already, we don't need more, and winning GOTD will potentially make other devs think this should be the norm!

Dark souls would be up there alright, Bloodbourne as a dark horse too.

I'd say the likes of GTA V will win GoTD.

Find it funny saying Sekiro too niche but then suggesting Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Aren't they all the same audience?

What about games that have retrospectively fallen off the list. Skyrim would have been on my itinerary of games of the decade, for a long while until I played games like BotW, making me realise that Bethesda's brittle and buggy games had a bit of Stockholm Syndrome about them...

Not exactly, Sekiro played to a sub section of fans due to the heavy use of parrying and countering.

HZD does not deserve to be mentioned in a GOTD list assuming it's a Top 10 or something like that.

It's standard open world fare with awful voice acting that took away from the over all package for me. I enjoyed it but it's not brilliant.

BOTW, Bloodbourne, RDR, Mario Galaxy (or was this out before 2010?), Mario Kart 8, Forza Motorsport, Mario Odyssey, Dark Souls, GTAV, TLOU, Minecraft (even if I don't see the appeal), Witcher 3, Persona 5 would all be well up the list and I'm sure there's even more recent ones I'm missing.

HZD absolutely is brilliant. Not game of the decade but it's a fantastic game.

The voice acting is a strange criticism of it too. It was very good, in my opinion. Ashly Burch is very good and Lance Reddick is awesome. Ted Faro's VA was good too.

I'm the opposite. Very few games have I enjoyed from start to finish, and this is one of them. The lore, the idea, the gameplay, the enemies, the voice acting were all superb for me. That, along with God of War, has kinda ruined gaming for me as they have set such a high bar. But again, it's all personal opinion. Loads of people love the souls-esqe type games and I don't. Similarly, there's massive love for Dishonored 2, and I thought it was pants.

Which is why it would be impossible to say, for definite, x game is GOTD. It's way too personal. The only way to really do it is to go by sales, but that presents its own issues too, such as platform exclusives not selling as well due to being an exclusive.
