the union is insisting those who employ its members offer them royalties, stunt pay for "vocally stressful" recording sessions,

dunno if this is good or bad - would mean more possibly bad amateur voice acting in future AAA titles if it's scoffed at and less development cash for AAA if successful. I dunno how much they're asking for in royalties but those names are worth at least considering it, especially Jennifer Hale.

they want the same treatment given to animation voice actors from what i can tell, but yeah i dunno if it'll be good or bad for the industry - possibly good in the longterm

There's a knock on effect to consider here too. Writers directors etc already get residuals for TV and movies so wouldn't the writers, directors, animators, programmers etc in games be next to strike? I know there's already a bonus tied to metacritic scores but a bonus tied to sales seems like a better deal.

Wil Wheaton threw up a pretty good explanation of what they're looking for
    http://wilwheaton.net/2015/09/this-is-why-i-support-a-sag-aftra-strike-authorization-for-video-games-and-it-isnt-about-money/

To be honest, a lot of what he's saying does sound pretty reasonable. I don't know about residual pay, but a few of his complaints sound fairly justified.

I'd imagine if your job is voice acting, screaming out lines could put a strain on your voice and potentially put you out of work for a couple of days if you lose your voice. Can't see a problem there myself.

I'd imagine if your job is writing novels of code, sitting hours on end could put a strain on your back and arse and potentially put you in hospital and give chronic pain for the rest of your life. Can't see a problem there myself.

And if you were unionised and you looked for better working conditions, I'd have no issue with you doing that and I'd support you. I'm not sure what your point is.

Difference there between being an employee and what is essentially a specialist contractor.

They can seek what they want, their right to do so. But I've no sympathy or support for unions in general.

The gaming industry isn't under their thumb with no options, some will likely concede to the changes if it's manageable but a majority will force on without any of them.

After reading Wil Wheaton's take on it, I'd be very sympathetic

Yeah. Not sure I agree with royalties, but they definitely seem to have legitimate concerns which should be addressed.

Agree with all their concerns but honestly they can feck off with royalties. Coders, artists and sound guys are far more deserving of royalties and put much more of their lives into these products and yet will never see a dime of royalties. Screen and stage actors can push for royalties because they have pulling power, you get your actor to gaurantee bums on seats and realistically nobody is buying a game because they heard Troy Baker is in it.

I'd say that's there to oversell what they really want, which is ultimately to be haggled back down to fair/reasonable treatment - consider that some companies wont even talk to them about these things, the royalties line would definitely get people to perk up and pay attention

Microsoft has acquired Havok from Intel.
Today, we are proud to announce that Microsoft has acquired Havok, the leading provider of 3D physics, from Intel.

As we welcome Havok to the Microsoft family, we will continue to work with developers to create great gaming experiences, and continue to license Havok’s development tools to partners. We believe that Havok is a fantastic addition to Microsoft’s existing tools and platform components for developers, including DirectX 12, Visual Studio and Microsoft Azure.

Havok is an amazing technology supplier in the games industry and the leading real-time physics creator. We saw an opportunity to acquire Havok to deliver great experiences for our fans. Throughout the company’s history, they’ve partnered with Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and many others to create more than 600 games including Halo, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Destiny, Dark Souls and The Elder Scrolls.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Havok continues our tradition of empowering developers by providing them with the tools to unleash their creativity to the world. We will continue to innovate for the benefit of development partners. Part of this innovation will include building the most complete cloud service, which we’ve just started to show through games like “Crackdown 3.”

Havok shares Microsoft’s vision for empowering people to create worlds and experiences that have never been seen before, and we look forward to sharing more of this vision in the near future.

Yeah, they started out of Trinity. They still had offices in Dublin last I checked.

Had a class thought by one of them (Steven Collins), guy had more teaching assistants that he knew what to do with and a decent MS sponsored competition for one of the projects we had to do.

Possibly Far Cry: Sigma or a new Might and Magic game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

It was accidentally revealed as Far Cry Primal: http://www.pcgamer.com/far-cry-primal-announcement/

Was going to say I might actually vomit if I ever play another Far Cry but a Stone Age setting might actually be interesting if they give us proper survival mechanics not like the mess you have in Rust and Ark, on closer inspection it looks like it might be a mobile game though so back to sleep until Fallout and Just Cause.
