They are just handy, nothing on the TV just flick on the console. Far less things to go wrong aswell (less fiddly to fix). They are also cheaper.

The cheapness aspect is/was important, though a solid one can be put together for around €400 these days (and the savings on games and subscription type setups pay that back very quickly, before the added lifespan etc to games with mods and whatnot).

I do agree on the technical aspect scaring people off and think that and the 'flick on' part are huge misses on the part of PCs - putting one together and figuring out issues is actually quite similar to a complex version of Lego (just did my first one last year and was startled by how easy is it, and how little they do to promote this) and also don't like opening in standard Windows desktop so actually have mine open up in a Kodi UI that looks very much like a PS or Xbox type of one that let's me jump directly into anything from TV shows or movies on my hard drive to streaming to emulators (where I've over 2,600 games because feck it why not :p ) to Steam games and so on.

You've got a fair point alright, it's just a bit of a shame in that sense that the ease of use isn't promoted in terms of someone developing a 'prebuilt' interface (as Kodi was very tricky to get just as I wanted it at times) and ease of construction being shown. At least small cases becoming more frequent (mine is the length/width of an A4 sheet of paper and 7" tall as an example) should help somewhat.

I don't know why, but it just really irritates me since switching over seeing Sony and Microsoft charging €50-60+ for people to essentially play the games they just bought and how restrictive things can be. Probably failing at it, but really not trying to come at this as a 'PC mastertwat' type (use gamepads on all but Civilization/Football manager type games, used the TV at first and then replaced it with a HD projector - I fully get the whole not wanting to sit at a specialised desk with really complex keyboard/mouse setups etc) so apologies if I am! :o

I haven't paid more than €35 in a good few years for Live. If get 4 free games a month for that as well.

In fairness Billy that's the best "y'er all just peasants post" I've read. :)
I played a little on PC back in the day and it was a nightmare in terms of the machine becoming obsolete in a relatively short period of time. I appreciate things are probably a lot better now but I'm happy with the console. Turn it on and off you go.....unless PSN is hacked.
It was only around 2009 I started getting into online gaming through COD and I'm happy enough to pay the price for what we get.

It's a fair point, though €35 got me MGSV, Doom, Arkham City and Knight, Mad Max and maybe 3-4 other titles. €35 isn't bad though for the year I'll admit, think I remember the one on the Xbox 360 being about €60 when I had it without too much in the line of extras (though it was a long, long time ago).

I've heard it was a pain previously, not so much now - but they really don't seem to do a great job of selling the ease of use side of things which is a bit baffling to me so you do have a fair point there. Aaaand you don't have to deal with bitcoin mining making consoles more expensive for undisclosed periods of time!

You can get plenty of Console games cheap as well between PlayStation and Xbox sales and Argos regularly reduce games to €15-€20.

Also of those games you listed above how many have you actually played and how many are locked away in the dark corners of your Steam library to never see the light of day :P

Got through all of them actually bar Portal 2 (it was €2 the other week, may stay on the long finger for a while though!), except Mad Max which got a bit boring and repetitive so I gave up on it maybe 2/3rds through.

The Steam 'untouched' library may well be a thing 12 months from now though I'll admit! Visiting the 'gamedeals' subreddit or seeing 'Skerries' as the latest poster in the thread here is a dangerous, dangerous game! :D

It's a hell of a lot better now. Ease of use has come on leaps and bounds and with my OS installed on a SSD I find the PC a much more user friendly experience than the PS4 which can be a nightmare for a normal Joe soap to set up.

Still not perfect. Had a fight with my drivers to get gamemaker to work but then that's development work. I haven't had any issues with games bar the odd dodgy port which is getting rarer.

I actually don't see much value in a console if you have a PC. Exclusives are few and far between. The Xbox has near nothing on it since all the exclusives are coming to PC and while it's better on PS4 a lot have disappointed me (uncharted 4 is boring and I want to love last guardian but it's just not great). It's certainly not got the wealth of exclusives the PS2 or 3 had.

Conversely there's not a lot to distance a PS4 from the PC as well. The exception is Bloodborne which is worth the asking price of a PS4 alone. Just wish it was on PC in 60 fps and no frame pacing issues!

The console/PC space is all a bit homogenous and kind of boring with the Switch and 3DS really being the only outliers, and the switch hasn't exactly not a diverse line up that isn't indies that you can get elsewhere yet.

having to pay €50 for PSN does annoy me, having to pay €180 a year for a minecraft server for my gf annoys me more

Who's they? There's several reasons MS, Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Valve wouldn't push it in fairness

    What reasons would they be?

Can see no reason why they wouldnt want the masses to know its easier than ever to build a PC

If they all get on it together, maybe yeah.

AMD - I imagine MS and Sony wouldn't be happy with them pushing it given they've got the console contracts.
Nvidia+AMD - Extra marketing money that may potentially benefit the other. They also have laptop contracts.
MS - Huge contracts with the likes of Dell, HP and loads more. Also extra marketing for MS
Intel+AMD - Pretty much the same as Nvidia and AMD.
Valve - They'd rather push Steam Machines I'd imagine.

A lot of these fall back to the mass manufacturing contracts or just straight up extra marketing. Not one of these companies are guaranteed to benefit from any marketing they do on how easy it is to build PCs, coupled with the fact that third parties will do it for free anyways. Just a few minutes thought about it, far from any comprehensive decision based upon knowledge.

Id agree MS have no real incentive to push people to build their own PC's.

I dont believe it would be harmful for AMD,Nvidia and Intel to push marketing wise for people to build there own PC's though. If someone like dell doesnt like it its not like they have many options for places to go regarding CPU's and GPU's.

Even though theres only really the 3 big players in the desktop component market i think they all have there place. Intel high end CPU's,Nvidia with a whole range of GPU's more geared toward the top premium end and then AMD filling in the gaps in that range with a more budget focus. Although Ryzen has shaken up the cpu market amd looks a good product for AMD and will help them break intels hold on the high end.

So if dell decide to drop say AMD they wouldnt be able to compete at the lower end of the laptop market. Be sabotaging themselves.

I get what your saying though but id just see it a little differently.

The way people go on about consoles being "switch on and go" and pc's arent, is a bizarre argument from 1997  Once set up, a PC is every bit as accessible as a console.

Its more to do with your console been plugged into your TV to be fair. Turn on your console and your away. PC you've to get up off the couch, go to your desk, switch on and play away.

That's two extra steps right there... Yes I'm lazy :P

I've my pc sitting alongside my PS4 right under the tv...both are ready to roll with the press of one button

Do you not sit at a desk? I'd imagine using a keyboard and mouse would be difficult on the sofa?

I'd say I'll eventually get a PC to play RATS games again but not for a while.

My PC is upstairs on a desk with my Xbox and PS4....it's actually the only one of the three I can turn on and play in the living room without getting off the couch :D

You need to move one of your consoles downstairs so when your two lazy to move you just have something to play :D

    MAN ON IRISH FORUM
    IN PS4 AND PC SHOCKER

Today on boards.ie, the well known Irish forum frequently overrun by bored people with nothing better to talk about, a user spoke of overcoming decades of stigma and learning to embrace love of both the lowly console AND the PC.
'I've my pc sitting alongside my PS4 right under the tv' said a defiant Inviere, unafraid of the potential backlash his inflammatory statement could provoke. 'Both are ready to roll with the press of one button' he continued, helping to break down the stereotypes more narrow minded people have about our beloved gaming technologies. At the time of going to press, he hadn't expressed any love for the Xbox and was unavailable for comment.
