Hi all,

Just a little notice to say that Kilkenny Musical Society will be holding auditions on Sunday 22nd January at 2pm. We are finalising a venue att the moment so I'll come back on here in the next day or two when I know for sure where it'll be.

The show we are staging this year is "Little Shop of Horrors" and it will take place from Sunday 8th April to Saturday 14th April in The Watergate Theatre. There is no need to audition if you simply wish to be in the chorus.

The roles and specifics of same are the following:

Seymour – age approx 20-30 yrs
Seymour is a stereotypical nerd type character with little or no social skills and is most at home amongst the plants in the backroom of Mr Mushnik’s flower shop. Seymour is completely subservient to Mr Mushnik and although he is secretly in love with Audrey he could never muster up the courage to tell her. This role requires a very strong sense of understated comic timing.


Audrey – age approx 20-30 yrs
This is a predominately understated comic role. Audrey is a self-conscious, self depreciating young lady who allows herself to be physically and verbally abused by her dentist boyfriend, Orin. Audrey works in the flower shop with Seymour and she is secretly in love with him but does not consider herself deserving of someone as nice as Seymour.


Mr Mushnik – age approx 45 yrs +
Proprietor of Mr Mushniks flower shop. A cranky and cantankerous old Jewish New Yorker. Must have a good flair for comic timing of a sharp and caustic nature.


Orin - Age approx 25-35
The sado-masochistic boyfriend of Audrey who gets his highs from inhaling his dentist gas and inflicting pain on others (especially Audrey). This role requires a sharp (almost manic) sense of comic timing and the ability to project an overstated sense of self.


Audrey 2 – The Plant
Although this character never appears on the stage in person (hidden in a large man eating plant) it nevertheless requires a large stage presence through the projection of voice. Much of the singing and vocal work needs to be delivered in a manic and overstated manner (think of James Brown in full flow, particularly in the upper range).


Chiffon, Crystal and Ronnette – Age approx 20-30 yrs
Three vibrant and sassy females with attitude who play a considerable role in telling the narrative of the piece. The roles require a soprano, a mezzo and an alto. Timing and personality are important ingredients for these roles.


There are a number of cameo roles e.g. Patrick Martin, Skip Snip, Mrs Luce and Bernstein as well as a host of walk on roles and these will be auditioned and cast in the early days of production.

*** In order to ensure authenticity of the piece it is important that the role of Mr Mushnik is played by an individual within the required age profile of 45 years +.


Anyone wishing to audition must prepare an audition piece (dialogue and song) and can get a copy of same by emailing info@kilkennymusicalsociety.com stating which part(s) you wish to audition for. If emailing/printing is an issue, we will have a limited amount of scripts/sheet music available from The Watergate Theatre from tomorrow (Thursday) evening.
