Car tax - going away for a few months

    Hey,

I was under the impression that you would not have to tax a car for period of time where you were not driving (going away etc.) The process would be to formally report this to the gards, or fill a form out.

I heard a rumour that since last year this is now changed, and you must still pay the car tax regardless.

Does anyone know what the rules are here?

    Thanks in advance,
    James.

The currentlaw allows a vehicle to be untaxed when off road.

The rumours going around are nonsense. There's talk of bringing in a system similar to SORN in the UK, where you have to pre-register taking your car off the road, but that hadn't been implemented, or even finalised, yet.

The current system still stands: Just don't tax your car. When you want to start using it again, you fill in a form declaring that it was off the road, take it to a Garda station for confirmation and signatures, and present this alongside your motor tax form.

Obviously this is open to abuse, which is why the new system is being proposed.
