Hello all, im interested in getting a new scope as i'm going to get a new .308 and need a good scope.. I need something affordable say anything up too €800 maybe? I know Zeiss have a nice few ones.. I also like S&B, IOR and Nightforce.. Anything that's good to take in the light for the late evenings in Summer and lamping.. Any suggestions would be appreciated :) If ye know the rough prices too that'd be great :) Also if anyone is selling one and wants too offer post or PM me thanks all :)

For 800€ I would go for lower end of EU brands. Kaps, Docter, IOR and Mepta would be my choice.

The first one would probably be Kaps Klassik 2.5-10x56, it is around 800€. Zeiss, Swaro and S&B are unfortunately high above 1000€ mark in most cases.

Depends what you are going to shoot with the .308 , targets or game ? You can buy the fixed power schmidt and benders for around your budget limit if you are shooting deer , i had a s+b 8x56 and it was excellent especially in low light. The hungarian models are great too.

If you're shooting in low light, a S&B 8x56 will be a good choice. I think there are a few second hand ones knocking around in the for sale section.

Mostly game foxes and deer.. Yes i would prefer a 4-12x50 or x16 max for longer range and targets the odd day.. I know prices will increase alot due to this.. Thanks for the replies.

If you know anyone going to America get them to go to walmart for you and buy a Centerpoint scope. I got one while there last year. Its a 4-16x40, mil dot illuminated reticle.....wait for it.... it cost me $69 !!!!! I have it on my .308, have often knocked it against rocks while stalking, banged it off trees and it even survived falling off the quad. I dont know the legalities of importing a scope bought online but I know theres no problem bringing them in a suitcase I have been to america 11 times and always bring something usually scopes or range finders back for friends.

One thing Ive learned in life is NOT to spend big money on scopes, you dont always get what you pay for. I paid £900 for a scope when I started stalking many years ago and I have seen them up to €2800 in my local RFD. Never again will I spend big money.

Another really good scope to look out for is pecar of berlin , they are extremely well made , all steel construction and the lenses are top class too , keep an eye out on british websites as they seemed to sell better there than here for some reason.

I think that optics is more important than rifles, since you can allways improve your shooting with trigger job, bedding, specific ammo....

With the scope you just buy it and have it.

You can see brands I mentioned here:

I have a Meopta 7x50 on my .308 and am very pleased with it as a hunting scope, I've used cheaper scopes (Hawke etc.) and the step up in quality is huge. This is a good site with UK prices http://www.northern-optics.co.uk/MEOPTA_SCOPES.html.

consider this one, its a vortex viper. I hear great things about them and they are right in your price range.

IIRC Pecar of Berlin, run by the Braun family, has been and gone.

Other companies worth looking at is MTC and Vortex [mentioned above] - they will all be at the upcoming Newark show here in England, if anybody is coming over. Apart from IWA [not open to the public] this is one of the largest shooting sports show this side of the Atlantic, if not THE largest, with upwards of 50,000+ visitors over the two days it runs.

Think also the new range from Bushnell, and the lower edges of IOR and Leupold.

I strongly disagree with the view that cheaper is better. What would you rather drive - a TATA or a Mercedes-Benz?

Yes tac pecar have sadly gone , its a pity as i know several people who have them and swear by them, the scopes were nothing flashy , no gizmos or gimmicky toys , just well made and good lenses made from good glass.
I agree about the cheap scopes , all the bells and whistles for less than €100 when the equivalent german or american scope would be many thousands , the corners have to be cut somewhere, crappy plastic lenses mainly i'd imagine.

I would advise looking at the Kaps range, really good quality for the price.
I have a S&B 3-12x50 Zenith and a 2.5-10x50 Kaps, the Kaps is nicer to look through and lighter.

I think that 4-16x50 FFP is better for hunting, but it is true that Vortex Vipers FFP scope are really good value.
