"WILL nobody stop the political gravy train? With the country up to its eyes in debt, it is disgraceful that 26 Independent senators and TDs are receiving annual allowances of thousands of euro at the taxpayers’ expense — utterly unvouched and untaxed."

    http://www.examiner.ie/opinion/editorial/oireachtas-expenses--political-elite-remain-untouchable-180022.html

And this in a week where it was confirmed that a bailed-out bank is still paying Golf Club and Yacht club membership fees as a "bonus" for its employees.

Seriously? is this bullsh!t ever going to stop?

If the allowance does in fact assist independent senators by evening their position with those who have party support I think it should stay. At least we have a chance to hear from some actually independent politicians who aren't dependent on some third party backer with their own agenda. Party politics is the biggest affront to democracy in this country and anything that helps eliminate it should be supported.

In fairness Sean the Senate shouldn't even exist. As for TDs if you look across the water we should only have around 44 TDs here in comparison. Gravy train doesn't even cover it really.

I agree it shouldn't exist but it does. And it plays a role in Irish politics. And while it is there we should try and make it as independent as possible.
