rheostat where to buy

hi all

I'm looking for a rheostat that ranges from 0 to 20 Ohms preferably ( Can go higher than 20ohms, i can just limit its range)

But it needs to be able to handle 500W.

Looking on farnell's they are over 500e.

any ideas of where to get one a bit cheaper?

using it as a variable load for a testing rig im building. currently using a 500w 10 ohm power resistor but id like to be able to vary the resistance

That's a fairly big amount of power for a rheostat. Do you need it continuously variable? a few electric cooker elements might do the trick if they were switched in/out....

If you were feeling brave you could probably make up one out of a couple of 1KW electric fire elements. You would just need to make a wipper to run along it, that could take the heat.

that price is much more realistic;)

it will probably only be 200W but it may spike to 500w from time to time.

i was thinking of the diy option but i don't want to cause another fire:D

im using a 500w 10ohm power resistor at the moment but id prefer to be able to vary the Resistance of the load and then in turn vary the current drawn
