Is it considered alright to ask a past employer whether they were asked for a reference check recently?

Not sure if this would be considered confidential or not. I'm not concerned with details of the reference check - just whether one was made or not.

It really depends on your relationship with the employer.

I would only do this if there was a genuine reason to do so other than curiosity.
