Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I genuinely think a top class attacking midfielder (assuming we keep RVP) would get us at least another dozen points next season. It's something we really lacked last season.

What are we happy with next season out of interest - CL places again? More?

Lots of talk that he will follow Brendan rodgers to Liverpool.
He's worked with him twice already and Tony Barrett of the Times claims that one of the conditions he returns to Swansea was if Rodgers stays.

    Premier league,
    Champions league,
    FA Cup,
    Carling Cup,
    St Totteringham's Day.

Bare minimum? Third within 10 points of winners, st totteringhams day.

    Champions League qualification.

City and Utd are far ahead of us and Chelsea are spending money like it's going out of fashion again. 4th place next year would be a realistic objective.

Rumour is Walcott was a target until dalglish got sacked, I'd have Gilfi over theo any day, even gervinho

This but it's not a given. Newcastle will challenge again, if they can keep hold of their best. Ditto Spurs and neither has to worry about the Champions League. We still need to strengthen to keep pace with everyone else. M'Vila would be a great addition but failing that a dedicated defensive midfielder is a must. Dempsey would be very useful too.

I don't think Newcastle will challenge next year tbh. I really do think that Cisse and Ba won't bang them in like they were doing last year. Second season syndrome.

Hangaland and Dempsey from Fulham, we can give them a couple and a couple on loan and Jagielka and Baines from Everton. Solidifies defence and more options upfront and no need for a season to settle in. Have a nibble at Maluda and Mata see what comes of it. Mata under pressure now with Hazard there.

If we were playing Football Manger maybe... There's no way we're getting anywhere near Mata or Malouda (wouldn't want him anyway). Dempsey rumours are circulating so that's possible but I wouldn't see us getting him AND Hangaland. Doubt we'll be in for Jagielka or Baines either although I think Jagielka would be a decent addition.

Might be worth taking a punt on Diego maybe? He's back at Wolfsburg now AFAIK so should be available for reasonable price. Showed great promise early in his career but has failed to produce since then. Perhaps worth a gamble??

With Jussi Jaaskelainen leaving Bolton, wouldnt mind him as backup for a year, knows the league, and can step in when needed.

Just watched France v Serbia. M'vila off injured after 5mins...expect to see him in an arsenal shirt soon!
Kos had an excellent game for everything he was asked to do.
Giroud didn't get much decent ball in the half hour he played.

France playing with lots of confidence and are very good going forward. I'd say they will win their group handy.

Russia v Italy tomorrow on ESPN.

Report just on UTV news for 2010/2011 season and we had the 5th highest wage bill at £111m for the year. Chelsea were the highest at £174m.

Interestingly, Liverpool were ahead of us in 4th place with a wage bill at £135m.

So does spending the money on the big names guarantee anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,273 ✭✭✭batistuta9

the amount you spend on wages & the amount you spend on transfers aren't the same thing

paying big transfers fee's for good top quality players will pay off in regards trophies

Would generally disagree with that as the high transfer fee players are generally the highest wage earners

Think of how they paid over our all-time club transfer record to spend 12 months trying to loan Lukaku out to clubs - £20m. Crazy, crazy.

I will point out again you are wrong - we couldnt loan him out under FIFA rules because players are not allowed to represent three teams in one season and we havent paid 20 million for him, we paid 13 million rising to 18

Fifa fair play my arse. Its gone way beyond a joke now, how are you meant to compete with the sugar daddies.

The worst thing (aside from Chelsea getting stronger of course) is that to me £38m doesnt sound like a lot any more. Thats how much money is in football now. It seems just a little more than average at this stage.

Utd did - 4 times I believe they won it in the Roman era

You buy decent defenders! - your lot shipped 49 goals - thats 20 more than City

I know that they couldn't loan him out - but they tried to. Fair enough if I'm wrong about the fee but I still see it as a staggering waste of money. Maybe in his third year he will finally come good after he finally gets that loan.

    Defend the Torres signing so!

Well Chelsea can buy their impressive players for big bucks but can they turn around and say they have a player as influential as chamakh in their side?

I think not, thats why i'm proposing they get in on this bidding war for him like the other superclubs of europe have. A bid in the region of 30 million pound for him might get you your man, but only a figure of 30 million or more. We cannot let our prized player go away for free in these strenuous times.

    dfbemt wrote: »

at clubs like city, chelsea, anzhi etc. yes & probably in general your right

but you said arsenal are fifth yet their record transfer fee is ~£15mil for arshavin or nasri. liverpool just ahead of arsenal broke their record transfer fee twice that season with suarez & carroll, before it was torres for ~£20mil. Not massive amounts of money if you don't consider the carroll fee yet their them clubs are the 4/5 highest wages in the league.

but your original point "does spending the money on the big names guarantee anything?"
It does, but what it guarantees is not certain & i don't mean just a once off big name/big money signing. chelsea & city even man united, barca, real, inter spent and won trophies, malaga spent and got CL qualification, anzhi got EL qualification, PSG got CL qualification.

the reason their big money/big names is because their good players and the better your players are the more chance you have

Jaaskeleinen is exactly the #2 we should be after.

You'd get him for half what we paid Lolmunia.

I'd like to think that even you could agree that paying £13m to leave a player more or less in the reserves for the season is absolute madness.

I don't dislike your club per se Sgt Pepper, but I absolutely abhorr whats going on there and has gone on there for the past 8 years or so. And I hope you'd understand why I hope it all comes crashing down around you at some stage in the near future.

I and many others do agree with you about many things we see wrong at Chelsea.
The buying of players (and paying high prices) only to ship them out on loan - never to return, is one of them.
The absense of a manager - especially one who has just won the one trophy that Roman wants is staggering.
The way they lied to us about the SB shares as well
But at the end of the day we really have no control over these as you do at your club, so you can only support them cant you?

I dont think it will come crashing down on us, as that was a question put to them very early and it has been allowed for. At the moment, Roman is a rare beast in that he is fully commited to Chelsea and continues to pump money into them.

At the moment Chelsea on the up, but then I was a ticket holde rin the dark days - saw them relegated, electric fenses etc etc so I'm enjoying the ride whilst it lasts. But things do go in cycles so watch this space!

38m for Hulk is insanity. I've only really seen him play in the CL but he's never struck me as world class, not familiar with his domestic form though.

His domestic form is... pretty awesome to be fair. 96 apps - 52goals and 42 assists.

BUT its the portuguese league, playing for a team that never lose and score for fun against fairly crap opposition.

He seems like he has the right attributes to do well in the PL. But €38mill is just madness.

I remember seeing him in the Europa League final in Dublin and thinking he was an overrated, lazy, greedy diving bollix :pac:

That was my impression from that game. I have seen him play great in other matches though. Perhaps he will be the new Baptista?

Hopefully they will find oil at the old Highbury site and we can splash the cash too.

Whether you love or hate Drog as a person, there is no doubting the man is a phenomenal player. Hulk looks dangerous but I haven't seen him enough to know if he is as good. He doesn't look as Athletic or mobile.

While i feel sorry for M'Vila, it would greatly keep his valuation down if he was to miss the Euros. Is this Marvin Martin the same sort of player?

The injury to M'Vila is not so serious. Touch and go whether he'd be ready for the England game but he's going to the Euros.

I thought as much. Hopefully AW has a few deals tied up in advance of the Euros. though it will probably be for 15 primary school kids. Perhaps the Half Irish/half Cameroon young lad with relatives from Mayo is on his way from Real Madrid on the donkey and trap :D

Hulk is a Phenomenal player and only hasnt been snapped up because of his massive buy out clause, he is as strong as drogba and much more mobile, with a rocket left foot. Pity Arsenal cant afford such sort of quality :(
