Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can I take the car to a scrapyard/ breaker, and return the registration cert myself so I can claim back tax?

No, you have to take it to an Authorised Treatment Facility, surrender the registration cert and get a certificate of destruction, then get form RF120 here...

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF120_en.pdf

fill it out, get it witnessed and stamped at your local Garda Station, then send it, the certificate of destruction and the tax disc to your local motor tax office, not Shannon. The tax disc has to have at least three full months remaining on it i.e. if you were submitting it in January, it would need to expire on April 30th or later.

10 Q. Can I apply for a motor tax refund?

10 A. Yes. You can apply for a refund on your motor tax if your vehicle has been:

    • Scrapped or destroyed by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)
    • Stolen and not been found
    • Sent out of Ireland permanently, e.g. sold abroad
    • Not used in a public place because you are absent from Ireland for business, educational reasons or with the Defence Forces.
    • Not used in a public place because of owner illness or injury.

There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc for a refund application to be considered. All applications for a refund must be made to your local Motor Tax Office, irrespective of whether you taxed online or in a Motor Tax Office. In order to apply for a refund you need to complete an RF120 form. This form must be witnessed and stamped by a member of An Garda Siochana.
