If you look at the roof of the Porsche on the tyres you can see the roll bars had to work overtime to protect the driver,
Still Darios crash in IndyCar made this look like a fender bender!

Amazing how 'safe' modern race cars are when it comes to protecting the driver.

for anyone interested the Bathurst 1000 is on tonight

Just an amusing side note I noticed during the Japanese GP,

Ferrari say they don't have a factory GT team for endurance racing,
Yet Kobayashi was wearing Ferrari gear and was based in the Ferrari garage at the GP, and he drives for AF Corsa who are represented in practically every GT series on the planet.

More evidence, not that it was needed, that AF Corsa are just Ferrari in disguise:)

was meant to post this the other day, there are rumors the Porsche that tested at Paul Ricard met a fiery end :( not sure how this will effect their testing program as i don't know how many tubs they have built but i believe an endurance test they had planned at Sebring next month may have been canceled, again these are just rumors so could be bollocks

I see Toyota have signed Mike Conway as a reserve driver, well deserved after an impressive season in LMP2

The great Allan McNish has stepped down as a driver for Audi's factory LMP,

Though Audi's Twitter account suggests he will work with them in another capacity.

Very fast driver and a nice guy, will be missed.

Just leaves Kristensson as the remainder of the fabulous 3 after Dindo and Allan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭Zcott

Allan was a true gent and a serious racer, and I'm sure Audi will feel his loss as a driver. I don't envy anyone trying to step into those racing boots.

Nissan fully committed to LMP1 WEC entry from 2015

All we need now is the Ferrari rumours to lead to something concrete and we could have a proper 5 way battle in 2015. Audi, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota and Ferrari.

Judging by the resurgence of sportscar/endurance racing it's really starting to look like Peugeot dropped the ball by ditching their LMP programme.

Its a good time to be a sportscar fan :D

So Gabe Newell of Valve fame is behind one of the GTD Porsche cars at the Rolex 24 the weekend after next. Damn, I might actually have to watch it now!

Rumblings on Twitter that some motorsport news source was tweeting pics from the scene which is pretty reprehensible, they're not being named so as not to give them extra views.

Shame that last lap GTD battle penalty has overshadowed the overall win in the Rolex 24...

EDIT: And four hours later after the race, they reverse the penalty!

After hearing all parties seem in good health after the accident I decided to watch it(I missed it live),

It actually gets worse with every viewing!

The forces invoked to literally punt a Ferrari from the rear and send it off the track are insane.

The 2014 R18 and what sounds like a 458 testing at Yas Marina

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Sterling Archer

Was reading a few articles about the crash online, all coming to the same conclusion that because Matteo Malucell was still moving at the time of impact the forces involved were significantly lowered, the impact was horrific to look at but
For Malucelli, the main force of the impact was transmitted to him from the initial rear-end hit. The Ferrari, shunted from behind, went through an extreme acceleration—the G-forces were greater than what Gidley's car suffered in deceleration. The result for Malucelli was massive whiplash, which in turn knocks the brain hard into the front of the skull. That’s bad, and it explains his severe concussion. But again, because the Ferrari had ample room to accelerate—and, critically, not change direction—the impact force was greatly reduced. More of the energy from the crash was spent moving the Ferrari forward instead of crushing the driver.
