You're asked to be a mod, usually based on history and contributions in a forum.

Subscribers and mods are very different. While mods get most of the advantages of a subscriber (custom avatars etc), subscribers get no mod abilities and otherwise just normal users.

Would it true to say that after someone accepts the invitation to moderate, "Moderator" appears under their user-name? Are some "Registered Users" really "Moderators" outside of their home forums, so to speak?

Moderators are treated as "Registered Users" outside of the forum they moderate. We only have moderator powers in the forums under our names, but that doesn't mean that every time we post in 'our' forums that we're posting in the capacity of a moderator. We usually highlight the difference by using regular font for posting as a regular user, and bold font when we're posting as a moderator.

Bold font makes it look like ye are shouting, how about changing bold to a fiery red.

The use of bold is a widespread convention, but not a requirement so ultimately it's a mods own choice. Also red may not work well on every theme or for those with colour blindness.
