Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Should Ireland employ sex workers for those with severe disabilities?

Hopefully this won't turn into a 'legalise prostitution' debate, as there have been many and my question is really about a very specific area of prostitution and to do with very specific clients - the disabled.

I believe that sex workers should be available to people who are living with severe disabilities and to whom other avenues of having encounters with the opposite sex which might lead to sex, is just not an option for.

Here's a short clip to a wonderful documentary that dealt with the issue:

So, do you feel that this country should have sex workers available to those suffering with severe* disabilites?

*Not just those woth nightblindness or something ;)

Sure the same could be said of ugly people!

I've heard of this being done before, but it would need to be regulated in some way.

As someone who works in the field of disability, I can see this thread, in this location on boards going horribly, horribly wrong.

FWIW, yes, I do. But I also think prostitution should be legalised and regulated for everyone.

Hell No, it's best put it up for tender and let the best pimp win the job.

Why not? If there are sex workers who are comfortable with the role and disabled people who might never otherwise experience the joy of human contact and sex, I don't see the problem.

I would have said no until I saw a Jim Jeffries stand-up where he talks about taking his disabled mate to a brothel in Melbourne (at his behest). Not only was it hilarious (I recommend you watch it) but it was actually quite touching as well.

They are still people with needs who are unlikely to get it from other sources, why not have people who are willing to do it with enough sensitivity and care?

EDIT: here are the youtube clips

I can't find part one but basically it's about a childhood friend of his who has muscular dystrophy and one of his last wishes is to have sex

Oh, and that clip is NSFW, in case that needs to be mentioned. Lots of dicks and cocks in there!

Sex is great but if its with a prostitute then it's just for self gratification so my answer would have to be no.

Is self gratification a human right ?

After all, it's people with disabilities you should address.

They already get the best parking spaces , places at sporting events and concerts and now you want their pro's paid for? Not a chance. They should pay themselves like everyone else.

My initial reaction was thus: "What the actual fúck?!?"

Then I realised the thread was half-serious... And I think that the country is in a sorry state enough than to be shelling out money to provide cheap thrills to anybody.

Maybe get some of the men/women on the dole to provide said services to the disabled, that way there's no extra money going out and the people on the dole get a bit of cheap entertainment on the side. Everybody wins!!!

Can anyone else imagine the terms and conditions that would end up in a public-sex-worker's contract once SIPTU got involved?!

It'd be so lucrative you'd have girls queueing up to do it for 3 months in order to retire at 19.

Interested to see what the general view is from people with and without severe disabilties thanks.
They should pay themselves like everyone else.

I never said that they shouldn't have to pay; I asked if that service should be made available to them.

I agree with those that have said they would like to see the service there for all members of the public, but feel it a more urgent need for those with certain disabilties and so feel that, first and foremost, the service should be in place for those with whom human contact, beyond the touch of a carer, is a rarity.

Nope, if there's going to be a legitimate sex trade it'd have to be avail for everyone to make use of the services. Otherwise that's discrimination.
    Stompbox wrote: »

Moot point really, it's only "not illegal" as women involved in it are by defualt considered to be victims. The possiblity of self incrimination would make them hesitant about contacting Gardaí if there was a need to for any reason.

    What is illegal is:
    Solicitation
Keeping a Brothel (more then 1 escort / prostitute making use of a premises, there doesn't even need to be a pimp or madame involved)

If you can't advertise it or setup shop, there's not much worth to it being technically recognised as "legal."

If sex-workers were employed in this capacity, the sale of wheelchairs would skyrocket across the country.

Errr, the title quite clearly says "Should Ireland employ sex workers for those with severe disabilities?" Which would suggest you meant should the government pay for people to have sex with people that suffer from disabilities.

Eh, the Government employ many people to provide many services to the public and see very few that are free.

Self gratification??? You mean pleasure. No pleasure isn't a right, but I think we should live in a society where seek to make people's lives as enjoyable as is realistic and practical. The pleasure of sex for the disabled is something I'd be happy for my tax to be spent on.

    LOL

    Thanks for that

I hope this topic gets onto Le Monde 'Irish accept all austerity measures, and introduce new disabled sex tax'

But what if people abuse it? What if there are disabled Latvians claiming for rides that never happened, or claiming for rides in another country??

Arent there dildos and plastic fannies available in every town these days. If a partner had to wipe an ass, surely s/he could hold a fleshlight or other device for a few minutes while the other misfortunate drives and reverses himself into it.
