    Just came across this tonight - I knew our shower were overpaid but this takes the biscuit - don't forget to take into account our tiny population.

    Is there anybody that believes that there wouldn't be takers for a TDs job if the salary was slashed to €50k? The old peanuts and monkeys adage has been proved to be bull****, so why not try something new. If it led to an exodus from the Dail it would be a worthwhile outcome in itself. :D

    What is wrong with paying our politicians well, its a difficult job and carried a lot of responsibility. Remember we also have one of the best paid PS in Europe.

    I really don't see what our tiny population has to do with anything.

    And they deserve more than 50k in my opinion. It's a thankless job, and I'd imagine most TDs (or at least the intelligent ones) would be on a lot more than that in the private sector. Also that scale is misleading because it doesn't take into account the average wage in the respective countries.

    Wouldn't read too much into it tbh. Also the minimum basic wage should be taken into account, the general cost of living, etc etc. As the article stands it's just a bunch of figures that have no correlation without the extra information needed.

    How about living beyond our means - Charlie Haughey's catchcry - small country smaller salaries for the those at the top. I mean Enda earns more than Obama! Obama has the power at his finger tips to end life on the planet - although it could be argued that Enda and our present government have the power to end life in Ireland.

    Since when is serving your country dominated by a salary? I'd gladly serve my country for 50k, its the principle that counts rather than the Euro sign on my pay cheque.
