Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

lots of different methods and timings.
so you need to decide what suits you!
hard to beat the pough but adds quite a bit of time and expense with subsequent tilling.

we've disc'ed twice and P/Harrowed rocky ground in the autmn and worked fine

spring allows more flexabilty for spraying and better for clover but many argue that clover should be left out till yr2 so as you can use non clover safe (cheaper) sprays. but is the take of the clover as good yr2?

autmn ground is not out of rotation for as long...

too many answers to your question basically

If your field is anyway level at all to begin with then straight in with a power harrow/corndrill combo, 1 run and a run of the flat roller straight after. did this for 75 acres over last 2 years and will be doing it for the rest of the land over the next few years

Our fields won't see a plough again i'd say

    did you spray first

just wondering how long from spraying until you let in the calves for first grazing

using the power harrow roller method means you only need 1-2 fine days to complete the exercise whereas with ploughing you need much longer, for 75acres might need 2 weeks until seeds are sown

how does the PH method work on stony ground

Heavy spray of round up first and made sure we had a good kill before we went near it with PH

I would say that the PH works better than plough on stoney ground as it only goes down a few inches, whereas the plough will bring up stones. We don't have any stoney ground so this is only how i think it would go

yeah lads there are a couple of different ways of doing it all depends on your land and how you do the rotation. we used to re seed after the field was in a tillage rotation (either spuds, beet or barley) so we would plough and harrow then roll in the spring, would often undersow barley to make arable silage.
last year was the 1st year we re seeded a grass field. cut it for silage in june and when the cover came back sprayed off the grass, gave it 2 runs of the rotovator then harrowed in the seed and then rolled it.

actually a neighbour always says that the best of the soil is in the top 2 inches so he only every does direct drill and he doesnt make too many mistakes

Have tried direct drilling before but didnt get to see the full results as the contractor didnt clean his sprayer properly and burnt off the grass before one blade could be grazed that was last autumn time and still no grass . I think it will have to be ploughed due to scrub present :!
