Do you have a budget in mind?
Stick with TomTom or Garmin. Its the only way to be sure of up to date maps & software.
You can compare TomTom devices here
    http://www.tomtom.com/en_ie/shop/car-navigation/
    And Garmin devices here
    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134

TomTom has the option of live services like traffic, weather & google search.

I want quality and am not going to bother with live but would like to have lane assist. Dont need bluetooth or any other gadgets. Just a plain sat nav. Just need Ireland and UK. Should I get one with a sd card? Will be used in Ireland only. Should I get Garmin or Tom Tom. Thanks for the help.

TomTom or Garmin is your choice. Both have the same options. Look over the links in the previous post.

Personally I'd run with Tomtom. Just updated my wife's Garmin maps to 2012 and most of limerick m7 motorway still missing. My own Tomtom had the road on it before it even opened.
