It seems never a day goes by without a new warning about something or other that is pleasurable, but also detrimental to health. According to this article, Indian researchers believe that unprotected oral sex may lead to HPV, a virus associated with cervical cancer being transmitted to men. This can, apparently, happen if the man has unprotected oral sex with a female partner who is infected with the virus. What the article does not say is what kind of protection a fellow can use when practising sex of this kind.

HPV can cause cancer of the head and neck, particularly in the upper throat. In the past few years, experts say, many such cases have been reported from European countries. The main causes of head cancer are smoking and alcohol consumption, so if you're into both and also like to go down on your honey, it looks like you could be heading for real trouble.

Mind you, it doesn't say anything about the other kind of oral sex, so BJs are still not on the "avoid"list.:)

We really need proper sex education in this country!

cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus - which is transmitted from sex - so if a girl has it obviously their genitals (bodily fluids) will contain the virus... ingesting it will give you a chance of getting the virus. if you ingest it through your mouth it's getting into your system so it's just like passing it on through sex. that's my understanding of it. but there's many people that will think nothing of unprotected oral sex anyway. and a very good point made by the OP is that they don't have any solution for what to do to protect yourself.

Much less chance though, unless you have bleeding gums.

You can get flat latex squares for that sort of thing if you are concerned.

There was a Documentary on this subject last week on BBC3. . Basically, it concluded men are more prevalent to throat cancers contracted via the HPV through oral sex on women than the other way around.

Dental dams. Don't know why LA is insisting on porn stars wearing condoms but not on them using dental dams.

You can make your own dental dam, get condom cut off top, then cut down the length, your own dental dam, also if flavoured you can have blueberry pie, rather than hair pie.

I am all like  and stuff. Do you mean the lack of male throat cancer suggests that men are just not eating enough hair pie? Or just bemoaning your own lack of dinner guests? Or saying the eatin' is happening alright, but the men is not dyin' of it?

I am bolloxed, but I was a heavy smoker so I think the smoke would have killed this virus before it rooted.

Well considering HPV has only recently become a fairly common problem, it is of not much surprise people in the past got away with it. But as this becomes more prevalent, there could be a rise in the incidence of oral/throat etc. cancers in the next few decades.

But then with things like this you can never accurately quantify the risk. Too many variables around.

This is why the HPV vacciene needs to be offered to blokes as well as girls.
