I moved recently and my file with all my refs is missing. I have pulled the place asunder and checked my old address but no joy. Some of the refs are from companies long since closed but I spent a long time with them and the refs were excellent. Now I have a cv but no refs and I am up the wall. Any Ideas ?

Maybe get on LinkedIn.com and try to get (and stay) in touch with your referees.

Written ones often don't mean much anyway.
