Hi all- just wondering what the going rates are in different places for general dogsbodies/labourers in australia. Thinking of heading out there as broke as a joke here. Have a business degree, but fully intend on looking for construction work. Ive laboured here , and in a couple of other countries. Im well able for hard work, but no real skills like being able to drive machines or electrics etc.

Can anyone that's in the know say where would be the best place to head, and what kind of money in general you've heard is going?

    Many thanks for any replies.

Sydney- poor pay would be about 18 an hour. Best rates for general labour go no higher than 23- 25 per hour. Most labourers are on 20 or so. Nightshift general labour/ demolition can be as good as 40, but usually only around the 30 mark.

Depends where and when mind. Dont know if its the same now but my mates said when they arrived in Melbourne 4 years ago 16 and hour wasnt uncommon (fair enough thats about 12.50 eurois which is decent for home, but compared to Sydney rates its a joke)

In Melbourne on the unions sites the flat rate for a labourer is just over 30 an hour. Then on top of that you have site allowance, usually between 2.50 and 4.50 an hour extra. About 32 dollars travel allowance per day. It works out at around 35/36 an hour.

You also have your super paid and its more than the usual 9%, aswell as payments made to your Long service leave and redundancy funds.

Then if you go working on the domestic side of things without union it could be as low as 20 an hour. But I think I saw somewhere that the minimum wage for construction is 23 but it doesn't always work like that.

The only union labourers I know are permanent residents. Dont think it is at all possible for temps tbh.

Unions hate backpackers so it would be very difficult to get one of these jobs on a whv.

Unions don't hire workers, companies do. There are a good few Irish owned formwork companies in melbourne and they all hire Irish WHV's.
