What exactly is a malware site?

I stupidly clicked a link to a site called clostery.com. before it opened I suspected it was something bad so I closed the window before it opened.Have I done harm and if so what can be done to protect against this type of thing?.
I have Avira antivirus which didnt pick anything up but I googled the site and on dataprotectioncenter it names it as a malware site.

They are sites that try install spyware/malware, steal information via phishing, spam you with ads via popups, that sort of thing.

If you didn't install stuff, or enter in personal details, or notice anything strange happening on your PC, then I wouldn't worry, especially if Avira didn't flag anything.

    Check this program out

    http://www.mywot.com/

It will let you know which websites are safe to open before you do it.

This extension will scan the contents of a page for malware before you load it, which is better than above

I scanned Clostery. com and it got reported as clean.
