What is the safest way to stop people tailgating

My personal favourite is when you come up to a car in the overtaking lane with nothing in driving lane - flash lights at car in front - car pulls into driving lane but increases speed e.g from 110kph to 130-140kph - a sort of "fcuk u, I can go faster than u, I just chose not to untl now", sort of way.
I had this situation just this afternoon on M4. I matched the speed of the car for approx 1km until the car came upon a slow moving car in the driving lane. I kept just level with the car so that the stupid bint couldnt change lane and had to slow way down - didnt see her again for the rest of the trip!

That is a bit inmature and also more dangerous than tailgating.

It is the same behaviour as the person on the right lane of the highway doing 120 who wouldnt move because he is already at the speed limit...

    Just let him be

I have had people in the outside lane with me behind them (not being aggressive at that point) come up to a car on inside lane.
They then matched the speed of that car, creating a roadblock.
After eventually letting me through they put the boot down to 140 km/h.
One guy slammed on the brakes in front of me.
Some people really behave as if you're trying to steal their ice-cream when you try to overtake them.
I don't tailgate anymore, t'was different years ago when I thought that if I could just bully one of those bastards driving everywhere at 60 km/h off the road for good, it would be for the benefit of mankind in general.
Makes me cringe a bit now, definitely being young and stupid.
There is definitely a "young and stupid gene" in a lot of males.
But when it comes to those "gallant warriors of the road enforcing the speedlimit", I can say that a lot of them seem to be 50-60-ish (not 80 as I would have thought) and mostly driving some heap.
They are the ones keeping out as far as possible, speeding up, beeping and flashing when you do get past.
The doddery auld ones (male or female) are not nearly as aggressive, much slower and easier to pass out in general.

Things have actually improved here since the 90's, it was desperate back then, you either drove at 40 km/h or 140 km/h, there was no middle ground, it seemed a lot more aggressive and there where no motorways, so if there was a dawdler, you where stuck behind him for half an hour at least.
Remembering seeing the end of the overtaking lane/dual carriageway and there was the auld farmers jalopy going at 40-60 km/h, so had to floor it as fast as it would go to just about (by inches) get past him, or be stuck forever.
And a lot of people where not fussy about blind bends, brows of hills, etc...
    They just went for it.
I actually remember hearing some reps had their speeding tickets paid for by the company, so if the had to cover Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Cork in one day, it was only possible to do so at a hundred miles an hour.
This was pre-penalty points, so tickets where seen as expenses, as much as petrol.

an excellent post Dr - it brings back a lot of memories - I suspect we may be of similiar vintage!
There has been a huge drop in fatalities on our roads due to motorways - and I think your post informs us why this has happened - you no longer have to take stupid risks to avoid being stuck behind some gobsh1ite farmer's jeep for the next 10 miles (adding at least 30 minutes onto your journey) because of the motorways.
Some of those same muppets are now trying to cause mayhem on the motorways though - hence this thread!

I always think of that scene with Vinnie Jones hopping the car door off some guys head, repeatedly, on Lock Stock & Two Smoking ... There are a few local hero's who could do with a bit of Vinnie medicine to sort out their driving!!!!!!

I have seen a lot of nordie cars on the m1 stuck behind someone in the overtaking lane driving with their drivers side indicator on to signal they want to get past. I think this is a nice passive way to try clear the way. Obviously it still wouldn't work on the numpties who try hog the lane or have forgotten what mirrors are.

Hehe, and he did a reprise of that scene in Snatch.
Yes, there used to be quite a lot of "elderly country gentlemen" that would sit in a sideroad, wait for cars to to be driving too "fasht" in their opinion, they would then pull out at the last second and proceed at 40-60 km/h, holding up the other car as long as possible.
A friend of mine completely lost the rag over this one day, forced the other car to stop and confronted the driver.
The other guy at first said "I didn't see you", but when pressed then said "I thought you where going too fast"
He did not hop the door of his head, but he was mighty tempted.

A guy died yesterday from a crash with a tractor pulling a trailer on a motorway (M9)! How many people have to be wipped out before they ban stupidly slow vehicles on fast roads!

That's a dcimpletely different point for a different thread.

Just a quick one....at no point did the OP claim to be 'hogging' the outside/overtaking lane.

Could be tail gated on the inside/left lane?

That's not true at all, some people have a sort of aversion to overtaking, but none to tailgating. I find driving at 65 in the driving lane attracts a lot of clutter behind you.

That's not true either. My experience in Ireland is, that people simply have no respect for keeping safe distance between two cars. If you can't estimate the seconds, at least do the half tachometer trick, as in you're at 100 km/h, the distance between you and the car in front of you should be at least 50 metres. Yet, you see clusters of cars driving behind each other for ages, while the first one is actually doing a decent speed. And I'm not going into the driving at the back of a lorry or a bus, which just tops the tail-gaiting idiocy.

I try to stick to the 2 second rule when travelling on the motorway. I've frequently had instances where there's a car alongside me, a car alongside the car ahead of me, and there are two cars in the lane beside me in the gap between me and the car ahead of me. That's 3 cars in what I consider a safe following distance for 1.
    e.g.
    ME Car
    Car Car Car Car

Before I get jumped on for patrolling a lane or something, I would be in the driving lane.

Safest way to stop people tailgating?
If you are in the right/cprrect lane (driving lane) you wont be tailgated

On a single lane road if you drive at the correct speed you wont be tailgated.

Simples - if you are being tailgated you are doing something wrong.

That's not true. Some people will bully you because they want to push you to drive faster when they can't overtake while you are driving at the max speed limit allowed. Some people tailgate you because of their poor driving skills, i.e. they are not aware of things such as safe distance. If someone is driving is too slow for you, overtake.

I'd say the safest way to deter tailgaters is to have a dashboard camera/fake camera pointed out the rear and a little sign saying "Tailgater camera in operation".

Ok, in 99% of times if you are being tailgated you are doing something wrong.

    Theres always 1% of nutters!

The worst thing you can do is to tailgate someone who's driving skills are poor, could be a new driver or simply lacking confidence. I know, in an ideal world they shouldn't be on the road, especially not on their own but they are out there, during the weekends you have your share of farmers who took their old wan for a bit of shopping and a fancy lunch in a carvery and mums on the school run can be a disaster as well but if you tailgate them, you are only risking that they will get stressed, nervous and start making stupid mistakes such as suddenly braking or even driving too fast and losing control over their car.
This case should be reread again and again as a reminder that the skills of drivers on the road can vary and it is the task of the very experienced driver to lead by example and also think for the others not only for themselves.
If I see someone walking too slowly on the street, I won't be pushing them or bang their backs so that they walk faster or get out of my way.
Similarly, I won't be doing it on the road. If you are not extremely in a hurry because your wife is just giving a birth or someone's dying, there is really no reason to be aggressive, rude and disrespectful.
And once again, I like driving fast. But I also like driving safe.

Not even remotely true - I doubt there's a poster on here who hasn't been tailgated on a single lane road when they were doing the limit plus or minus a few kph.
